Domaine Paul Mas: A Family Legacy
Château Paul Mas, located in Pézenas, is the historic birthplace of Domaines Paul Mas, a leading name in Languedoc wines. The story began in 1892 when Auguste Mas acquired his first vineyard plots. Over generations, the estate expanded, becoming a key player in the Languedoc wine industry. In 1987, Jean-Claude Mas inherited 35 hectares of vines and founded Domaines Paul Mas in 2000, revolutionizing the image of Languedoc wines by blending tradition with modernity. His visionary approach and expertise in blending and vinification have made Domaine Paul Mas a pioneer of the "New Languedoc."
Domaines Paul Mas: Exceptional Vineyards with a Diversity of Terroirs
The estate spans over 940 hectares, with 30% certified organic, supported by 1,500 hectares of partner vineyards. Spread across three major vineyard sites, these lands offer a unique diversity of terroirs:
- 39 hectares in Conas for IGP Pays d’Oc wines.
- 81 hectares in Montagnac (Vignes de Nicole, Clos de Savignac, Clos des Mûres).
- 42 hectares in Caux (Clos du Moulinas, Domaine du Cres Ricard, Clos Astelia, etc.), dedicated to AOP Languedoc, Grès de Montpellier, Pézenas, and Terrasses du Larzac.
The soils range from gravelly clay-limestone and fossil-strewn slopes to the marshlands of Thau, providing an unparalleled aromatic richness. Benefiting from the Mistral and Tramontane winds, the vines enjoy an ideal climate for optimal grape maturation.
Wines with Identity and Character
Through precise blending and meticulous vinification, Château Paul Mas wines embody the power and elegance of Languedoc. With 45 cultivated grape varieties, the estate offers a diverse and refined selection:
- Clos des Mûres, an iconic cuvée from a parcel surrounded by wild brambles.
- Vignes de Nicole, combining modernity with terroir expression.
- Clos de Savignac, a rigorously selected blend producing complex and refined wines.
The red wines, crafted from Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, reveal rich notes of black fruits, spices, and garrigue. The white wines, notably Chardonnay-based, captivate with their freshness and minerality.
Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Viticulture
Committed to preserving biodiversity, Domaines Paul Mas has embraced sustainable viticulture with:
- 40% of vineyards certified organic.
- HVE 3 (High Environmental Value) certification.
- Use of biocontrol methods and essential oils, eliminating chemical products.
- Preservation of old vines.
Through these practices, the estate produces authentic, expressive wines while maintaining the natural balance of the soil.
Château Paul Mas epitomizes excellence and innovation in Languedoc winemaking. Combining family heritage, diverse terroirs, and environmental commitment, this family-owned estate has become a benchmark for wine enthusiasts seeking distinctive, high-quality Languedoc wines.
