The Growing Market of Organic Wine

For several years, the organic wine market has been experiencing average annual growth in double digits. Wine enthusiasts and winemakers show an increasing interest in sustainable agriculture and viticulture that benefits consumers, winegrowers, and the environment. Various labels have emerged to regulate both organic viticulture and the production of organic wines.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL WINE?

The key difference between conventional and organic wine lies in the specifications set by the label. In Europe, the main label is the recognizable "AB": Agriculture Biologique. This specification defines the list of allowed (or prohibited) phytosanitary products for treating vines and the permitted additives in winemaking. An organic wine is thus one in which chemical inputs are drastically limited in favor of organic alternatives.

DOES ORGANIC WINE CONTAIN SULFITES?

Organic wines generally contain sulfites unless stated otherwise on the bottle, but the allowable amounts are significantly lower than in conventional wines. There’s no need to worry; sulfites are permitted in organic wines because they pose no health risks at the used levels and help preserve the wine over time. The headaches some experience from conventional wines often stem from chemical additives rather than sulfites, except for those who are intolerant or allergic.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE NATURAL WINE?

Organic farming and winemaking should not be confused with natural or biodynamic wines. A natural wine, also known as "vin nature," is produced with minimal inputs, both in the vineyard and during winemaking. Some winemakers even entirely forgo the use of sulfur. However, it is important to note that natural wines are more fragile than organic or conventional wines. Since natural wines do not use any chemical products, they can also be organic or biodynamic. The production of biodynamic wine, based on Rudolf Steiner's principles, may adhere to organic guidelines but involves additional practices, such as following the biodynamic calendar. Unfortunately, most natural wines do not carry any label, unlike organic or biodynamic wines.

WHY BUY ORGANIC WINE?

Purchasing organic wine supports the organic viticultural heritage and contributes to the preservation of French vineyards. A wine produced from organic farming is not responsible for pollution from chemical products and pesticides that some winemakers may use extensively. Today, organic farming is increasingly expanding in France, with regions gradually converting their vineyards to this more environmentally friendly practice. Whether you prefer white, red, or rosé wine, it is now easy to find organic options in any color, region, or AOC of your choice. At Avenue des Vins, you can find a selection of organic wines at various price points, from prestigious AOPs in the Rhône Valley or Bordeaux to excellent value IGP options.

WHY BUY YOUR ORGANIC WINE FROM OUR ONLINE STORE?

When you choose to purchase organic wines, it’s primarily because you want to consume a quality product that is more respectful of nature. However, before heading to your usual store to add a bottle of organic or biodynamic wine to your shopping list, consider a few important details. First, how far does a bottle of wine travel before reaching the shelves of your supermarket? At Avenue des Vins, when you order a bottle, it comes directly from the respective estate or winery. Moreover, home delivery is available within 48 hours in France and 72 hours in Europe. Additionally, unlike a physical store, our online shop provides you with extensive information and advice to help you choose the wine that suits you best. You can learn more about each estate or winery before making your selection, which you can then discuss with friends or guests. Finally, Avenue des Vins offers a unique selection of organic wines from various regions in France and AOCs. Whether you prefer white wine from Alsace or Loire, red wine from Burgundy or Bordeaux, or rosé from Provence or the Rhône, you are sure to find the perfect bottle. Why not start with an IGP Saint Guilhem Le Désert red organic wine, an AOC Saint-Chinian rosé, or an AOP La Clape organic white?
