An organic wine is therefore a wine in which synthetic chemical inputs are drastically reduced in favour of organic alternatives.

Organic wines generally contain sulphites, unless stated otherwise on the label, but the permitted levels are significantly lower than in conventional wines. There is no cause for concern: sulphites are authorised in organic wine because they pose no health risk at the doses used and help preserve the wine over time. The headaches that some people associate with conventional wines are more often caused by chemical additives than by sulphites themselves, except in cases of genuine intolerance or allergy.

Organic farming and winemaking should not be confused with natural wines or biodynamic wines. A natural wine, also known as "vin nature", is a wine produced with minimal intervention, both in the vineyard and the cellar. Some winemakers even avoid sulphur entirely. It is worth noting, however, that natural wines are more fragile than organic or conventional wines. Since natural wines use no chemical products, they can also be organic or biodynamic. Biodynamic wine production, based on the work of Rudolf Steiner, can also fall within the organic certification framework, but involves additional principles such as following the biodynamic lunar calendar. Unlike organic or biodynamic wines, most natural wines unfortunately carry no official certification label.
