Les Vignobles Juste - Médoc micro-cuvées from a Best Craftsman of France turned winemaker

Saint-Estèphe (Cru Artisan) and Haut-Médoc - Lamarque, Médoc (Gironde)

Les Vignobles Juste is the story of Yohan Juste, a "Meilleur Ouvrier de France" (Best Craftsman of France) in cabinetmaking who became a winemaker, crafting three Médoc micro-cuvées on the family plots in Lamarque. Médoc gravels, a Cru Artisan from Saint-Estèphe, a Haut-Médoc, and a genuine conversion to organic farming under way on the estate.

You can be a Best Craftsman of France in one trade and a winemaker at heart in another. Yohan Juste earned that title in cabinetmaking before returning to his grandparents' land in Lamarque, in the north of the Médoc. In 2008 he took over a micro-property and began signing his own wines: three confidential châteaux, old gravel vines, a patient ageing in French oak. The same taste for the right gesture, for wood and detail, carried from the workshop to the cellar. Artisan Médocs, to discover direct on Avenue des Vins.

Yohan Juste, from the cabinetmaking workshop to the Médoc cellar

Before the vine, there was wood. At just twenty-seven, Yohan Juste earned the title of "Meilleur Ouvrier de France" (Best Craftsman of France) in cabinetmaking, the highest distinction for manual craft in France. It says a lot about the rigour and patience of the man who would later care for these few rows of vines.

The vine, though, was never far: it runs in the family, in Lamarque, in the heart of the Médoc, where Yohan grew up. In 2008, on the death of his grandfather, he took over a micro-property and set out, at first in his spare time, on the adventure of wine. Plot by plot, he shapes confidential, human-scale cuvées where nothing is left to chance.

Based in Moulis-en-Médoc with his wife Sabine and their daughters Juliette, Charlotte and Emma, Yohan today runs three Médoc micro-cuvées. The same care for detail as in the workshop runs through every stage: pruning, harvest, vatting, cask ageing. An artisan winemaker, in the noblest sense of the word.

The gravels of the Médoc, home of great cabernets

The Médoc owes its great reds to its gravels: those soils of pebbles, sand and stones laid down by the Garonne, which drain water, store heat and force the vine to root deep. It is the favoured terroir of cabernet sauvignon, king of the Médoc, supported by merlot and petit verdot. Les Vignobles Juste work several expressions of these gravels, from the north of the appellation to the Cos hill in Saint-Estèphe.

The estate is fortunate to have old vines, some averaging more than fifty years: less generous in quantity, they give more concentrated, deeper grapes. Each château expresses its soil, quaternary gravels at Cos, sandy gravels elsewhere, clay at depth, for wines of keeping shaped by time.

Quaternary gravels (Cos hill, Saint-Estèphe) - Old vines over 50 years, finesse and depth
Sandy gravels - Freshness and fruit, a silky texture
Clay at depth - Water reserve, structure and ageing potential
Cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot - The Médoc trio, blended to suit each château

Craftsman's work, from the vine to the cask

In the cellar, Yohan Juste brings the rigour of the workshop to the vine. The grapes are vatted by gravity, without rushing the harvest, in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Maceration lasts around four weeks, paced by rack-and-return (and punching down for some cuvées) that extract colour and tannins gently.

Then comes the ageing, where the cabinetmaker speaks to the winemaker: eighteen months in 100% French oak casks, with a proportion of new wood tailored to each wine (up to 35% for Château Linot). The wood refines, structures and polishes the wines without ever covering the fruit. The estate is committed to an environmental approach, with plots already certified organic and Château Serin in conversion.

What is a Cru Artisan du Médoc?

The Crus Artisans are an official Médoc recognition reserved for small family properties where the winemaker masters the whole chain, from growing the vine to bottling. Château Linot is part of this classification, a mark of craftsmanship and authenticity.

How are these wines made?

The grapes are vatted by gravity in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, with a maceration of around four weeks paced by rack-and-return. The wines are then aged eighteen months in 100% French oak casks, with a proportion of new wood suited to each cuvée (up to 35% for Château Linot).

Which dishes to serve and how long to keep these Médocs?

These Médoc reds pair with red meats, lamb, game, dishes in sauce and matured cheeses. Serve them at around 16-17 °C, ideally decanted when young. They are wines for keeping: the most structured, such as Château Linot and Château Petit Serin, benefit from a few years in the cellar.
