Women Winemakers: Who Is Behind These Bottles?
This selection brings together estates run by women, on their own or with their family. Avenue des Vins builds it by hand from the estates on the site, and it currently holds more than thirty wines.
The wines in this selection
Reds. Reds are the largest group. Bordeaux leads, from the Merlot of Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur to Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. The South brings Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Minervois and Terrasses du Larzac.
Whites. Pouilly-Fumé, the Sauvignon Blanc of the Loire, is the backbone, alongside whites from the Rhône, Alsace and Savoie.
Sparkling wines. The Champagnes range from 100% Chardonnay to blends of the three Champagne grapes, including Premier Cru wines. Two Crémants, from Alsace and Bordeaux, complete the sparkling range.
Rosés. A few rosés from Côtes de Provence, where Grenache and Cinsault are sometimes joined by Tibouren, a grape found almost only in Provence.
From Bordeaux to Alsace
Bordeaux supplies the most wines, ahead of Champagne and Provence, which are level, then the Rhône Valley and Languedoc-Roussillon. The Loire is represented by Pouilly-Fumé; Alsace, Beaujolais and Savoie round out the map.
How to choose a wine made by a woman winemaker
For an aperitif. A Champagne, a Crémant or a Pouilly-Fumé.
With fish. Pouilly-Fumé Sauvignon Blanc or a Provence rosé, for grilled fish and seafood.
With red meat or game. A Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru or a Terrasses du Larzac, which stand up to a roast or a rich sauce.
Why buy from our women winemakers direct?
Depending on the wine, these estates are certified organic, biodynamic (organic farming timed to natural cycles), HVE, or Terra Vitis, a French certification for sustainable winegrowing. Some wines are also made with no added sulfites.
On Avenue des Vins, every bottle ships from the estate: you buy close to the cellar-door price, with no middleman, and careful delivery in France and across Europe.
Frequently asked questions about our 100% female-run estates
What is a 100% female-run estate?
It is an estate run by a woman, on her own or with her family. That is the definition Avenue des Vins uses to build this selection. The name on the label does not always tell you.
Are there organic wines in the selection?
Yes. Some wines are certified organic, a few of them biodynamic, and others are in conversion. The farming method appears on each product page and works as a filter in the list.
Which regions are represented?
Nine regions. Bordeaux leads, then Champagne and Provence level with each other, the Rhône Valley and Languedoc, the Loire, and finally Alsace, Beaujolais and Savoie.
Which wine by a woman winemaker makes a good gift?
A Premier Cru Champagne or a Châteauneuf-du-Pape, for someone who likes bubbles or red. For a white wine lover, a Pouilly-Fumé.
At what temperature should these wines be served?
Serve Champagne and Crémant at 8 to 10 °C (46–50 °F), whites and rosés at 10 to 12 °C (50–54 °F), and Bordeaux and Rhône reds at around 16 to 17 °C (61–63 °F).
Where can I learn more about the winemakers?
Each product page links to its estate's page. For the wider picture, read our article on the place of women in wine.
