Pays d'Oc, Bordeaux, Anjou: Three Label Terms Worth Knowing
On an everyday red, the appellation or IGP name already tells you a good deal about the style. An IGP Pays d'Oc is made from grapes grown in the Aude, Gard, Hérault and Pyrénées-Orientales departments, plus six villages in Lozère.
This wine nearly always names its grape: according to the IGP's specifications, 95% of its volume is sold with a grape variety on the label. Carignan gives deeply colored reds there, on its own or blended, notably with Merlot.
A Bordeaux red reads more like a blend. Its specifications describe Merlot as often the main grape, mostly paired with Cabernet Sauvignon and, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Franc. The result is supple, fruity reds with low acidity.
In Anjou, red wines are built on Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Grolleau can make up to 20% of the blend and Pineau d'Aunis up to 10%. These reds have structure, but their specifications want lightness to stay in the lead.

Grapes, Claret and Gamay: Your Questions on Everyday Reds
What does a grape name on a Pays d'Oc label guarantee?
On an IGP Pays d'Oc label, a single grape name guarantees that at least 85% of the wine comes from that variety. When the label names two or more grapes, each one makes up at least 15% of the wine, and all of them are on the IGP's list of main varieties.
What is a Bordeaux claret?
In French wine law, claret is a Bordeaux label term for a light-colored red with light tannins, made to be drunk cool and young. In everyday English, claret often refers to any red Bordeaux; on a French label, it means this lighter style.
What is the difference between an Anjou red and an Anjou Gamay?
An Anjou red is made mainly from Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, while an Anjou Gamay is made from Gamay alone. Anjou Gamay comes from a smaller area on the ancient rocks of "Anjou noir," and the rules describe it as fresh, lively and easy-drinking.
Where can you buy affordable red wines direct from the winemaker?
