Description and Origins of This Grape

An ancient white grape originating from Italy (also known as Trebbiano Bianco), Ugni Blanc is a white grape variety now planted worldwide, from France to Argentina, including Portugal and Bulgaria. In France, it is by far the most planted white grape variety in terms of area (10% of vineyard land). This success is partly due to its vigor, productivity, and disease resistance. However, the extensive planting of Ugni Blanc is primarily for distillation into brandy, especially in Cognac and Armagnac. Distillation requires large volumes of wine, which explains the expansion of planted areas in French vineyards and worldwide.

Main Terroirs Where It Is Cultivated in France

Ugni Blanc is a versatile grape variety that can be planted in various climates. However, its preferred terroir is undoubtedly in Mediterranean vineyards. Indeed, cool climates tend to highlight its acidity. In warmer vineyards, such as Provence, Corsica, Languedoc-Roussillon, and the Rhône Valley, its discreet aromatic profile and liveliness allow Ugni Blanc to balance the blends of white wines from Provence and the Southwest, adding freshness and tempering the exuberant character of other grape varieties.

Aromatic Characteristics

Ugni Blanc is mainly vinified in blends with Colombard or Manseng in the white wines of the Southwest (notably IGP Côtes-de-Gascogne) or with other Mediterranean varieties in Provence (Rolle, Clairette, Bourboulenc). We can distinguish the aromatic profile of Ugni Blanc in two categories: dry white wines and spirits (Cognac and Armagnac).

Ugni Blanc and its high acidity

What sets Ugni Blanc apart is its very high acidity. That natural freshness is exactly why it is the main grape distilled for Cognac and Armagnac: distillation calls for a crisp, lively base wine, and Ugni Blanc delivers it in large volumes. The same acidity lifts the light, crisp dry whites of southern France. In Provence wines and South-West wines, Ugni Blanc rounds out blends with grapes such as Colombard, Manseng, Rolle, and Clairette, adding freshness without overpowering them.

Serving Ugni Blanc

Serve Ugni Blanc white wines chilled, at 8-10 °C, to highlight their freshness and crisp, mineral style. These light dry white wines are best enjoyed young, as an aperitif or with seafood and light summer dishes. Cognac and Armagnac distilled from Ugni Blanc, by contrast, are served at room temperature as a digestif.
