Domaine Paul Janin & Fils: five generations of Moulin-à-Vent growers
Domaine Paul Janin & Fils - Moulin-à-Vent
Domaine Paul Janin & Fils is a family estate in Beaujolais, based in Romanèche-Thorins (Saône-et-Loire), in the heart of the Moulin-à-Vent cru. Since 1937, the Janin family has made Moulin-à-Vent crus and a Beaujolais-Villages here, in red and white. Éric Janin, the fourth generation, is now joined by his daughter Perrine.
In Romanèche-Thorins, on the granite terroirs of Moulin-à-Vent, the Janin family has been making wine for a century. Old Gamay vines, mass selection, long ageing and an organic commitment: Domaine Paul Janin & Fils makes characterful crus, plot by plot, available direct from the grower on Avenue des Vins.
A century of family history, from Jean-Claude to Perrine
The story begins in 1918, when Jean-Claude, a cooper and winegrower, chose to devote himself entirely to the vine and to wine. In 1937, his son Marcel bought the first plots in the Le Tremblay lieu-dit: the true birth of the estate. From 1952, convinced of the importance of the bond with his customers, Marcel bottled his wines at the property and began selling directly.
In 1962, back from the Algerian War, Paul joined his father on the estate; in 1967, he acquired the Les Greneriers lieu-dit, whose now century-old vines would give their name to one of the estate's flagship cuvées. A graduate in viticulture and oenology, Éric worked alongside his father and grandfather from 1983, before taking over in 2008.
Since 2018, Perrine, Éric's younger daughter, has been learning the trade: a viticulture-oenology diploma, then long experiences abroad, in Sonoma Valley in the United States and in Victoria, Australia. In 2023, she joined her father to work as a duo: the fifth generation is taking shape, each learning from the other.
The spirit of the estate
For the Janin family, the French word domaine contains main, the hand: the hand of work, of the gesture and of care. Éric carries on the legacy of his grandfather Marcel, a self-taught agronomy enthusiast, with a viticulture attentive to living things. Mass selection to preserve the diversity of Gamay, cherished old vines, and late harvests for ripe, dense grapes: here, time is an ally.

Moulin-à-Vent, the most prestigious cru of Beaujolais
The estate lies in the heart of Moulin-à-Vent, the only Beaujolais cru that bears no village name. The appellation covers two communes, Romanèche-Thorins and Chénas, and takes its name from a 450-year-old windmill, a listed Historic Monument, which stopped grinding grain in 1850.
In Romanèche-Thorins, the soils carry a rare signature: manganese, a rock once nicknamed the glassmaker's soap, as it was used to whiten the glass of the earthenware works. On these weathered granites, Gamay Noir alone gives deep, structured wines built for cellaring.

In the vines and the cellar: the choice of time and living things
Éric Janin runs the estate with respect for living things. Committed to organic viticulture, with official AB certification since 2024, he favours mass selection to preserve the complexity of Gamay and the life of the soils. The many old vines are trained as low goblets, and the manual, late harvests seek ripe grapes with dense substance.
In the cellar, the wines take their time: often eighteen months of ageing on fine lees, with micro-oxygenation, to gain elegance and complexity. Each cuvée is vinified as whole bunches, plot by plot, before blending and bottling at the estate.
The estate's cuvées
Single-plot Moulin-à-Vent crus, from 100% Gamay Noir, complemented by a Beaujolais-Villages red and a white.
Vignes du Tremblay
Moulin-à-Vent - 100% Gamay
The cuvée that marks the estate's origin, on the plots acquired in 1937. A blend of several lieux-dits, all finesse and purity, aged eighteen months on fine lees.
Les Greneriers
Moulin-à-Vent - 100% Gamay
From vines planted before 1914, on the lieu-dit bought by Paul in 1967. A powerful, intense cru, born of century-old vines on deep granite.
Héritage
Moulin-à-Vent - 100% Gamay
The blend of the estate's oldest vines, 80 to 100 years old. A structured, opulent Moulin-à-Vent, conceived as a legacy passed down through the generations.
Saprolite
Moulin-à-Vent - 100% Gamay
Another face of the appellation: plots on the most typical saprolite granites of Moulin-à-Vent, for a wine of fine minerality, rich and balanced.
Empreinte
Moulin-à-Vent - 100% Gamay
The imprint of the terroir and of the generations: a generous, expressive Moulin-à-Vent from younger vines, to enjoy in its youth.
The estate also produces two Beaujolais-Villages wines: Argiles, a 100% Chardonnay white born of Éric's curiosity, and Piémonts, a generous red from old Gamay vines. Since 2018, the Maison Paul Janin & Fils has also been making cuvées exclusively within the Moulin-à-Vent cru, in the estate's style.

Frequently asked questions about Domaine Paul Janin
Where is Domaine Paul Janin & Fils located ?
Domaine Paul Janin & Fils is located in Romanèche-Thorins (71570), in Saône-et-Loire, in Beaujolais, in the heart of the Moulin-à-Vent cru. This family estate grows its vines on the granite terroirs of the appellation, renowned for its cellaring wines. It is based at 651 rue de la Chanillière and sells its wines through a short supply chain, direct from the grower.
Who runs Domaine Paul Janin today ?
The estate is run by Éric Janin, the fourth generation of the family, a graduate in viticulture and oenology. He took over from his father Paul in 2008, following Jean-Claude and Marcel, the founders. Since 2023, his daughter Perrine, trained in France and then in the United States and Australia, has been working alongside him: the fifth generation is preparing the estate's future.
What is the Moulin-à-Vent appellation ?
Moulin-à-Vent is regarded as the most prestigious of the ten Beaujolais crus. It is the only one that bears no village name: it takes its name from a 450-year-old windmill, a listed Historic Monument. The appellation covers two communes, Romanèche-Thorins and Chénas, on granite soils rich in manganese. Here, Gamay gives structured, deep wines suited to long cellaring.
What grape variety are the Domaine Paul Janin wines made from ?
The estate's Moulin-à-Vent crus and its Beaujolais-Villages red are made from a single grape: Gamay Noir à jus blanc, the king of Beaujolais. On the granites of Moulin-à-Vent, it expresses power, structure and depth. The estate also makes a Beaujolais-Villages white, the Argiles cuvée, from Chardonnay planted on a former Gamay plot in Romanèche-Thorins.
What are the cuvées of Domaine Paul Janin ?
In Moulin-à-Vent, the estate offers several single-plot crus: Vignes du Tremblay (the original cuvée), Les Greneriers (century-old vines), Héritage (the oldest vines), Saprolite (saprolite granite soils) and Empreinte. There are also two Beaujolais-Villages wines, the white Argiles (Chardonnay) and the red Piémonts (Gamay). Since 2018, the Maison Paul Janin & Fils has made other cuvées, exclusively in Moulin-à-Vent.
Are the Domaine Paul Janin wines organic ?
Yes. The estate has undertaken official conversion to organic viticulture, with AB certification obtained in 2024. This commitment continues a long-standing care for living things: mass selection to preserve the diversity of Gamay, soil work without herbicide on some plots, and respect for the balance between the vine, its soil and its environment. It is a long-term approach, cuvée after cuvée.
What is mass selection ?
Mass selection consists of replanting the vineyard using cuttings taken from the estate's best old vines, rather than from commercial clones. At Domaine Paul Janin, this choice aims to preserve the complexity of Gamay and the genetic diversity of the vineyard, while keeping the ecosystem alive. It is a demanding practice that protects the identity of the old vines for future generations.
Is Moulin-à-Vent a wine for cellaring ?
Yes, Moulin-à-Vent is the Beaujolais cru most renowned for cellaring. Its tannic structure and depth, from Gamay on granite, allow it to age and gain complexity over the years. At Domaine Paul Janin, the single-plot crus benefit from long ageing, often eighteen months. Store the bottles lying down, in a cool place, and serve these wines at around 15 to 17 °C, decanted if you wish.
What is the difference between the Domaine and the Maison Paul Janin & Fils ?
Domaine Paul Janin & Fils makes its wines from its own vines, in Romanèche-Thorins. Since 2018, the family has also created the Maison Paul Janin & Fils, an activity that produces, depending on the potential of each vintage, cuvées exclusively within the Moulin-à-Vent cru, from terroirs whose identity is perfectly known. The Domaine and the Maison share the same artisan spirit and style.
What food pairs with a Moulin-à-Vent ?
Moulin-à-Vent, structured and deep, pairs with red meats, roast poultry, game and slow-cooked dishes such as beef bourguignon. When younger, it also goes with charcuterie or a cheese board. On the Domaine Paul Janin cellaring cuvées, decanting brings out the bouquet. Serve these wines at around 15 to 17 °C.
Where can I buy the Domaine Paul Janin wines directly ?
You can buy the wines of Domaine Paul Janin & Fils direct from the grower on Avenue des Vins, without an intermediary and as close as possible to the cellar-door price, with careful delivery across France and Europe. The estate also offers tastings by appointment, Monday to Saturday, in Romanèche-Thorins. Buying through this short circuit guarantees the origin and traceability of the bottles.
