Château de Sassangy: organic Burgundy wines & Crémant since 1979

Château de Sassangy - Domaine Musso

An organic estate since 1979, in the Côte Chalonnaise (Burgundy). The Musso family farms 50 hectares of vines: Mercurey, Santenay, Aligoté, Chardonnay and Crémant de Bourgogne.

Some estates turn to organic farming as a trend. Château de Sassangy has practised it since 1979, long before organic became a selling point. Here it is a family conviction, passed from Jean and Geno Musso to the next generation, Julie and Cécile, at the heart of a Burgundian château the family brought back to life. Across 50 hectares in the Côte Chalonnaise, vines, meadows and livestock form a single ecosystem, and give wines and Crémant de Bourgogne to discover direct on Avenue des Vins.

1979: organic long before the rest

The story begins in 1979 in Dracy-lès-Couches, when Jean and Geno Musso chose to farm their vines to the European organic standard, a rare choice at the time, in a Burgundy still largely conventional. Over the years, the estate took shape, plot after plot, on the clay-limestone soils of the Chalonnaise.

In 1999, the family settled at Château de Sassangy, a former seigneurial property (recorded as early as the 17th century), remodelled in the 18th century and restored in the 1990s in keeping with its classical character. The Mussos arrived as keepers fully aware of what they held in their hands.

Around the château is a mixed farm of some 280 hectares: 50 hectares of certified organic vines (Ecocert), meadows, cereals and a herd of Aubrac and Charolais suckler cattle. A vision in which the vine is never separated from its surrounding ecosystem. Today, Julie and Cécile Musso carry on this legacy.

A pioneering, award-winning estate

Organic since it was founded in 1979, Château de Sassangy is among the pioneers of organic viticulture in Burgundy. A commitment crowned by several medal-winning cuvées, and an estate listed in the Guide Hachette des Vins.

Côte Chalonnaise, Mercurey, Santenay: the Mussos' organic Burgundy

The Côte Chalonnaise stretches between the Dheune and Grosne valleys, where Burgundy's hills open towards the south. This relief, born of the faults of the Massif Central and the collapse of the Bresse graben, shapes slopes with many exposures. On the estate's clay-limestone soils, the grapes gain the minerality and tension typical of the great Chalonnaise whites and reds.

The estate spans several terroirs: Mercurey, one of the great Chalonnaise appellations, 12 km from Chalon-sur-Saône; the Hautes Côtes de Beaune, on sunny slopes at the foot of the limestone cliffs; and Santenay, on the Montagne des Trois Croix. All within a mixed-farming ecosystem, vines, meadows and herds of Aubrac and Charolais, where biodiversity is a farming tool in its own right.

Pale-gold robe, floral nose (acacia, hawthorn) and apple, with a hazelnut finish. Tender, lively palate, fresh and moreish. Ideal with oysters, goat's cheeses, gougeres, snails and jambon persille.

Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise White

AOC Côte Chalonnaise · Chardonnay · hand-harvested · cellaring 10-15 yrs · serve 11-13 °C

On clay-limestone, hand-picked. Bright robe with grey-gold glints; nose of white flowers (hawthorn, honeysuckle), dried fruit, citrus and honey. Lively attack, well-judged richness, delicate finish. With fish, seafood, grilled vegetables and soft cheeses.

Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise Red

AOC Côte Chalonnaise · Pinot Noir · wood vats 10-15 days · cellaring 3-8 yrs · serve 15-18 °C

Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune

Santenay

AOC Santenay · Pinot Noir · Montagne des Trois Croix · cellaring 10-15 yrs · serve 14-16 °C

From the vines of the Montagne des Trois Croix, this Pinot Noir shows a light-red, raspberry-tinged robe of real finesse, with supple tannins. With slow-cooked dishes (veal, braised beef) and glazed poultry.

Crémant de Bourgogne (organic)

AOC Crémant de Bourgogne · 50% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 10% Aligoté, 10% Gamay · traditional method

The estate's sparkling speciality: organic grapes hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed, slow fermentation. Fine bubbles, a nose of spring flowers, honey, spice and toast; a vinous palate on a citrus base. From aperitif to dessert.

Crémant Grand Éminent

AOC Crémant de Bourgogne · 100% Pinot Noir · Brut · 36 months on laths

The exceptional sparkling cuvee: made solely from the first press juice, aged over 36 months on laths. Slightly coppery robe, a fine bead of bubbles, aromas of roasted coffee, caramel and pastry; an ample, round palate. A powerful Crémant for connoisseurs.

Frequently asked questions about Château de Sassangy and organic Burgundy wines

Where is Château de Sassangy and who runs it ?

The estate is in Sassangy, in Saône-et-Loire (71390), in the hinterland of the Côte Chalonnaise, between vines and meadows. It is run by Julie and Cécile Musso, who have taken over the family operations founded in 1979 in Dracy-lès-Couches by Jean and Geno Musso.

Is Château de Sassangy certified organic ?

Yes, and from the very start, 1979. The estate is one of the pioneers of organic viticulture in Burgundy: the Musso family adopted the European organic standard from its first year of production. All 50 hectares of vines are certified organic (Ecocert), as is the mixed farm.

What wines does the estate produce ?

Whites (Bourgogne Aligoté, Côte Chalonnaise Chardonnay), Pinot Noir reds (Côte Chalonnaise, Hautes Côtes de Beaune, Mercurey, Santenay) and two sparkling wines: Crémant de Bourgogne and the Grand Éminent cuvee. All certified organic.

What is the Côte Chalonnaise ?

It is the Burgundy wine region south of the Côte de Beaune, between the Dheune and Grosne valleys. Its mainly clay-limestone soils give whites (Chardonnay, Aligoté) and reds (Pinot Noir) under appellations such as Mercurey, Rully, Givry, Montagny and Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise.

What food pairs with the estate's wines ?

Aligoté with oysters, goat's cheeses and gougeres; Chardonnay with fish and seafood; the Crémant as an aperitif or with dessert. The Pinot Noirs (Côte Chalonnaise, Hautes Côtes de Beaune, Mercurey, Santenay) go with roast or simmered meats, poultry, game and mature cheeses, beef bourguignon and coq au vin above all.

How long can the wines be kept ?

The Aligoté keeps 5-10 years; the Chardonnay Côte Chalonnaise, the Hautes Côtes de Beaune, the Mercurey and the Santenay 10-15 years; the Côte Chalonnaise red 3-8 years. Store the bottles lying down, between 12 and 14 °C, away from light.

What is the Aligoté grape ?

Aligoté is a Burgundian white grape, known in the region since the 17th century and entitled to the Bourgogne Aligoté appellation since 1937. Lighter and livelier than Chardonnay, it gives fresh, floral, slightly citrussy wines, perfect as an aperitif, and the traditional grape of the Burgundian Kir.

What makes the estate's Crémant special ?

It is made by the traditional method from organic grapes (50% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 10% Aligoté, 10% Gamay), hand-harvested. The estate also makes Grand Éminent, a 100% Pinot Noir Crémant aged over 36 months on laths, an exceptional sparkling cuvee.
