Mas de la Devèze: Roussillon wines from Tautavel and Maury
Domaine Mas de la Devèze
A family estate in Tautavel, in the Roussillon (Pyrénées-Orientales), revived in 2012 by Simon and Nathalie Hugues. Old bush vines, grenache and carignan, across Côtes du Roussillon, Maury and Muscat de Rivesaltes.
At the foot of the Corbières, in the Agly Valley, a very old wine estate had lain dormant since the 1980s. In 2012, Simon and Nathalie Hugues brought it back to life: 33 hectares of vines around Tautavel and Maury, bush vines (gobelet) often over sixty years old, and the full range of the Roussillon, bold reds of grenache, carignan, mourvedre and syrah, whites of macabeu and grenache, and the vins doux naturels that are the legend of the region. A revival to discover direct on Avenue des Vins.
A very old estate, a revival in 2012
The story of Mas de la Devèze goes back to the 1950s, in the heart of the Maury terroir. Then, after the crisis of the sweet wines, the vines gradually left the property, which was broken up in the 1980s. The estate fell asleep, but the terroir remained intact.
In 2012, Simon and Nathalie Hugues fell for this corner of the Roussillon and decided to bring it all back. They gathered the plots, restored, replanted, and rebuilt a 33-hectare estate straddling Tautavel and Maury. Within a few vintages, Mas de la Devèze established itself as a Roussillon name to know, right into the pages of the Guide Hachette des Vins.
The estate's philosophy
Letting a great Mediterranean terroir speak with the lightest possible touch. Here the farming is reasoned, treatments only when truly needed, the old bush vines are respected, and each plot is vinified to its own nature, for wines that tell their terroir: the sun, the wind and the soils of the Roussillon.

Tautavel and Maury, the terroirs of the Roussillon
The estate spreads across the Pyrénées-Orientales, at the foot of the Corbières and in the Agly Valley, between the villages of Tautavel and Maury. A landscape of garrigue scrubland and hillsides, swept by the tramontane wind, under a generous Mediterranean sun.
It is a land of contrasts: the schists of Maury, famous for their vins doux naturels, and the clay-limestone and marl soils of Tautavel, cut out for great reds built to age. Tautavel is also a major site of European prehistory, world-famous for Tautavel Man.
Roussillon, Tautavel & Maury (Pyrénées-Orientales)
Côtes du Roussillon Villages · Maury · Muscat de Rivesaltes
At the foot of the Corbières, in the Agly Valley, schist and limestone give powerful reds and vins doux naturels of great tradition.
The grapes of the Roussillon
A Mediterranean mosaic, in red and in white.
Grenache, mourvedre, carignan, syrah
Côtes du Roussillon red · Maury
Black grenache gives warm, fruity reds; mourvedre and syrah bring structure and freshness; carignan, often from old vines, makes wines of real character. Grenache also makes the great Maury, the Roussillon's vins doux naturels.
Macabeu, white and grey grenache, muscat
Côtes du Roussillon white · Muscat de Rivesaltes
Macabeu and the white and grey grenaches give round, fragrant dry whites; muscat makes the Muscat de Rivesaltes, intensely aromatic vins doux naturels.
Old bush vines, reasoned farming
The estate's signature is its old vines trained as bush vines (gobelet), close to the ground, a traditional pruning, ideal in the dry, windy climate of the Roussillon, that protects the grapes and concentrates the aromas. A few young trellised plots complete the range.
In the vineyard, Simon and Nathalie practise reasoned farming: treatments are carried out only when essential to the health of the vine and the quality of the fruit. Each plot is then vinified according to its terroir and its age, to bring out characteristics unique to each cuvee.
The estate's range
A dozen cuvees, in all three colours, from dry wines to vins doux naturels.

Frequently asked questions about Mas de la Devèze
Where is Mas de la Devèze located ?
The estate is based in Tautavel, in the Pyrénées-Orientales (Roussillon), at the foot of the Corbières and in the Agly Valley. Its vineyard stretches between Tautavel and Maury.
Who are the winegrowers ?
Simon and Nathalie Hugues, who in 2012 took over a very old estate in the Maury terroir, dormant since the 1980s, and rebuilt it into a 33-hectare property.
What wines does the estate produce?
Dry reds, whites and roses, as well as vins doux naturels (fortified sweet wines). The appellations range from Côtes du Roussillon (and Villages, including Tautavel) to Maury dry and sweet, Muscat de Rivesaltes and IGP Côtes Catalanes.
What is a vin doux naturel (Maury, Muscat de Rivesaltes) ?
It is a wine whose fermentation is stopped by adding alcohol (a process called « mutage »), which keeps some of the grape's natural sugar. Maury is made from grenache, Muscat de Rivesaltes from muscat: generous wines, served chilled, as an aperitif or with dessert.
What is the Côtes du Roussillon Villages Tautavel appellation ?
It is one of the most respected village appellations of the Roussillon, reserved for red wines. On the Tautavel terroirs, grenache, syrah, mourvedre and carignan give powerful, spicy reds built to age.
What is the difference between Côtes du Roussillon and Côtes du Roussillon Villages ?
Côtes du Roussillon covers reds, whites and roses over a wide area. Côtes du Roussillon Villages is reserved for reds, on better-defined hillside terroirs and with stricter production rules, hence wines that are generally more concentrated and longer-lived. Tautavel is one of the village-level names.
What is IGP Côtes Catalanes ?
It is a Protected Geographical Indication covering the Pyrénées-Orientales department. More flexible than the AOCs, it allows a wider choice of grapes and blends: it lets the estate offer freer cuvees, often fruit-forward and easy-drinking.
Are the estate's wines organic ?
The estate is farmed with reasoned viticulture: treatments are carried out only when essential to the health of the vine. For any organic (AB) certification, please check directly with the estate.
What are bush vines (gobelet) ?
It is a traditional way of training the vine as a small free-standing bush, without trellising, close to the ground. Well suited to the dry, windy climate of the Roussillon, the gobelet shades the bunches, limits yields and concentrates the aromas — ideal for the estate's old vines.
What food pairs with a Roussillon red ?
Tautavel reds go with grilled meats, lamb, game, stews and slow-cooked dishes, as well as mature cheeses. Serve them at around 16-17 °C (61-63 °F), decanting the cellar-worthy cuvees.
How do you serve and pair a Maury ?
Serve Maury chilled (12-14 °C / 54-57 °F). It is wonderful with dark chocolate, red-fruit desserts and even some blue cheeses. The more floral Muscat de Rivesaltes is lovely as an aperitif or with fruity desserts.
How can I order the estate's wines direct ?
Avenue des Vins lets you order the wines of Mas de la Devèze directly, with no middleman, as close as possible to cellar-door prices. Delivery is handled with care across France and Europe, the most direct way to discover this Roussillon estate.
