Savoie has 2,200 hectares of wines and 23 grape varieties owing to the variety of soil types. The Savoie region is made up of 21 white-wine appellations, 3 using Traditional Methods, 6 red and 1 Savoie rosé. Savoie's most typical varieties are Jacquère or Altesse for the whites and Mondeuse for the reds. Bugey has 500ha of vines. Before creating the appellation there were 212 varieties. Today the main ones are Gamay, Pinot Noir, Mondeuse Noire and Poulsard for the reds, and Chardonnay and Altesse for the whites. Since 2009, Bugey has received the status of AOC Bugey, Roussette du Bugey and Bugey Mousseux, or sparkling. Bugey also has two AOCs for sparkling wines, famous for their lightness, the Cerdon and the Montagnieu.
