Château Labastidié: A Historic Estate at the Heart of an Exceptional Terroir

Perched on the heights of the Gaillac vineyard, Château Labastidié enjoys a privileged location in one of France’s oldest wine-growing regions. It was in this area—where the vine was introduced by the Phoenicians more than four centuries before our era—that winemaking flourished alongside other prestigious territories such as Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage.

Today, the estate spans 78 hectares of vines under the Gaillac Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). Thanks to its elevation, the château benefits from a unique microclimate, ideal for producing wines of great elegance. The vineyard lies on a series of alluvial terraces shaped by the Tarn Valley, with a deep subsoil composed of sand, gravel, pebbles, and boulbène, giving the grapes an exceptional mineral richness.

A Rare Terroir for Powerful Reds and Refined Whites

This slightly acidic soil provides an ideal environment for local red grape varieties, particularly Duras, which fully reveals its nobility here. The red wines of Château Labastidié stand out for their structure, balanced power, and smooth, silky tannins.

As for white wines, the Loin de l’Œil grape variety—emblematic of the Gaillac region—finds perfect conditions here to express its aromatic complexity and delicacy. The late-harvest sweet cuvées are especially notable for their finesse.

A Perfectly Balanced Climate

Gaillac’s climate combines oceanic and Mediterranean influences. Spring humidity promotes healthy vegetative growth, while the warm, dry summers ensure slow and complete ripening of the grapes. The moderated effect of the Autan wind, softened by the valley’s geography, guarantees optimal vine development throughout the growing cycle.

A Place Steeped in History and a Unique Press in France

A 19th-century property, Château Labastidié entered a new era in 1990 when the Musée du Vin de Paris and the Conseil des Échansons de France discovered its outstanding potential. Captivated by its charm, they became the official owners in 2007.

The estate is also home to a “parrot press”, an exceptionally rare piece of French winemaking heritage. Used between the 16th and 19th centuries, this mechanical press was designed to crush grapes. Today, it is preserved on-site as a major piece in the collection of the Musée du Vin de Paris, recognized by the DRAC Bourgogne heritage inventory in 2004.
