Portraits of winemakers
Domaine du Tix: at the foot of Mont Ventoux, vineyards that have witnessed the passage of Caesar
Domaine du Tix is a place where history, landscape, and vine growing naturally echo one another. At the foot of Mont Ventoux, André Tremblay and Nathalie Bonhomme craft high-altitude wines with an artisanal approach, on an estate where the past can still be read in the soil.
What is the first image that comes to mind when thinking of Domaine du Tix?
When Domaine du Tix is mentioned, one image comes almost immediately to mind: Mont Ventoux still dusted with snow, standing beneath the blue Provençal sky. It is a powerful, almost silent presence that accompanies the estate through the seasons.
Set at an altitude of 350 metres, the vineyard benefits from a distinctive environment. The days are bright, yet the nights remain cool, helping the grapes retain their balance and aromatic freshness. This altitude gives the estate’s wines a character of their own, with a tension and finesse not always expected in the south of France.
What is the history of Domaine du Tix?
At Domaine du Tix, the story does not begin with the current generation. It goes much further back. Long before the vineyard as we know it today, this land had already lived several lives: a kitchen garden in Roman times, cultivation of madder, production of charcoal, olive oil, and grapes.
The site also served as a passage for pilgrims climbing up to the chapel of Notre-Dame-des-Anges, located a little higher up. It is a terroir that has been inhabited, worked, crossed, and passed down for centuries.
“Today, more than 2,500 years later, we still find coins bearing Caesar’s image among our vines.”
Few estates can tell such a story of continuity. Here, making wine also means being part of a landscape rich in memory.
Who brings the estate to life today?
The recent history of Domaine du Tix took a new turn in 2001, when Marie Pirsch and Philippe Danel acquired the property. At the time, the vineyard was producing table grapes. They then made a bold decision: grafting more than 20,000 vines to convert them into wine grape varieties.
In 2016, André Tremblay took over the estate with a clear ambition: to make authentic, precise, uncompromising wines. In 2020, Nathalie Bonhomme joined him, bringing thirty years of experience in wine production and marketing. Together, they form a complementary duo, combining hands-on rigour with a broader strategic vision.
“Working with the fruit to offer exceptional, authentic wines, without compromise.”
What makes Domaine du Tix wines unique?
The uniqueness of Domaine du Tix lies first and foremost in its human scale. Here, manual work is not a marketing argument, but a genuine production choice. This artisanal dimension allows every stage to be followed with care, without any desire to standardise.
The estate embraces a way of working that is both simple and demanding: observing, guiding, intervening with precision, and letting the Ventoux terroir express itself. This approach is reflected in the wines, which combine southern generosity with the freshness of altitude.
This is probably where the estate is most surprising: in its ability to offer Provençal wines that retain energy, balance, and genuine elegance.
Why is this estate not quite like the others?
Because at Domaine du Tix, the setting is not merely a backdrop. Mont Ventoux, the altitude, the site’s history, and its claimed artisanal identity all contribute to the estate’s character.
There is a clear desire to do things seriously, but without artifice. The wines are not trying to impress at all costs. Above all, they aim to be true, expressive, and faithful to their environment.
It is this blend of historical depth, manual work, and high-altitude terroir that gives Domaine du Tix its distinctive personality.
