Champagne or Crémant: what is the difference ?
Champagne is a strictly delimited appellation d'origine contrôlée exclusive to the Champagne region in north-eastern France. It is produced using the traditional method, second fermentation in bottle, primarily from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. Its specifications, among the most demanding in the world, impose precise rules on ageing, pressing and dosage.
Crémant is also produced using the traditional method with second fermentation in bottle, but in other French wine regions: Burgundy, Alsace, Loire, Bordeaux, Limoux, Savoie or Die. Each appellation has its own grape varieties and distinct aromatic identity. Crémant de Bourgogne draws on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Crémant d'Alsace on Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois, Crémant de Loire on Chenin Blanc. All different expressions, all remarkable.
At Avenue des Vins, Champagnes and crémants are selected according to the same demanding criteria, intrinsic quality, value for money and producer commitment.
The terroirs of our Prestige Bubbles
Our prestige bubbles draw on the richness of French wine terroirs. In Champagne, the Côte des Blancs delivers Blanc de Blancs of exceptional minerality, the Montagne de Reims produces vinous and structured cuvées, the Vallée de la Marne crafts round and generous champagnes. In Burgundy, crémants benefit from the same chalky soils that have made the region's great wines famous. In Alsace, Crémant draws on the exceptional aromatic diversity of local grape varieties. In the Loire, Chenin Blanc brings unmatched natural freshness and acidity to the appellation's crémants.
Our producers, grower-producers in Champagne, independent estates in other regions, share the same commitment: demanding viticulture, total control of their production, with no middleman between their terroir and your glass.
Frequently asked questions about Prestige Bubbles
What is the difference between a prestige Champagne and a classic Champagne ?
A prestige Champagne is generally distinguished by its origin, a precise terroir, often Grand Cru or Premier Cru, and its production: longer ageing on lees, hand harvesting, low yields. It typically comes from a grower-producer who controls every step of production. The result is a more complex, more singular cuvée that faithfully reflects its terroir of origin.
Can a crémant rival a Champagne in terms of quality ?
Absolutely. The finest crémants, Grand Cru Crémant de Bourgogne, grower Crémant d'Alsace, reach a quality comparable to many entry-level Champagnes, often at a lower price. The production method is identical, second fermentation in bottle, only the terroir and grape varieties differ. At Avenue des Vins, every crémant is selected on rigorous tasting criteria.
What is a vintage Champagne ?
A vintage Champagne is made from the grapes of a single exceptional harvest, unlike non-vintage cuvées which blend several harvests. It benefits from longer ageing on lees, a minimum of 3 years under regulations, often considerably more among demanding growers. Its aromatic profile is more complex: tertiary notes of brioche, honey, sometimes truffle on the oldest vintages. It is the ideal bottle to give as a gift or mark an exceptional occasion.
What is a 100% Meunier Champagne ?
Meunier is a grape variety often used in blending to add roundness and fruitiness. Vinified alone, it produces generous, indulgent Champagnes with aromas of red fruits and brioche, with a characteristic velvety texture. These single-varietal cuvées are rare and sought-after, they represent the purest expression of a Vallée de la Marne or Montagne de Reims terroir.
How do I choose between a Blanc de Blancs and a blended Champagne ?
Blanc de Blancs, made from 100% Chardonnay, is fine, mineral and airy, ideal with oysters, noble fish and delicate starters. A blended Champagne, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Meunier, offers more roundness and complexity, versatile from aperitif through to the meal. The choice depends on the style you are looking for and the occasion.
Are organic crémants better quality ?
Organic certification guarantees environmentally responsible farming practices, not necessarily superior quality in the bottle. That said, growers who commit to this approach generally do so out of deep conviction, and this rigour is often felt in the aromatic precision of their cuvées. At Avenue des Vins, every organic crémant is selected on tasting criteria, not label alone.
