Canon-Fronsac: Black Fruit, Tannins and Natural Roundness

Canon-Fronsac has carried its current name since 1964. When it was recognized in 1939, the appellation was called “Côtes de Canon Fronsac.” It covers a corner of the Fronsac area whose wines were prized long before the appellation: as early as 1868, Cocks and Féret’s guide, Les Vins de Bordeaux, praised the wine of “the fine slope of Canon.”

A Pocket of Hilltops Between the Dordogne and the Isle

The Canon-Fronsac area lies inside the Fronsac appellation, in its southwest corner. It covers only part of two communes, Fronsac and Saint-Michel-de-Fronsac, where the Isle River meets the Dordogne. To the east, the Isle valley separates it from Libourne. In 2010, the vineyard covered 270 hectares (about 670 acres).

The landscape is a string of rocky outcrops above the Dordogne. Their summit, the Tertre de Canon, reaches 61 meters (200 feet), and châteaux were built there with views over the valley. The fairly steep slopes and the two nearby rivers help protect the vines from frost and pockets of cold air.

Most of the vines grow on a plateau of starfish limestone (calcaire à astéries), with clay-limestone or sandy clay soils; this permeable limestone drains easily. The rest sit on molasse slopes, where brown calcareous soils have formed. In between, a ledge of Castillon limestone, often wooded, runs along the side of the plateaus.

History of the AOC Canon-Fronsac Appellation

Nestled in the emblematic wine region of Bordeaux's right bank, the AOC Canon-Fronsac appellation, a close sister of the Fronsac appellation, is steeped in history and tradition. Dating back to Roman times, the region has always been recognized for the quality of its wines. Over the centuries, the Canon-Fronsac vineyard has established itself as a key player in Bordeaux's red wines, while maintaining an excellent quality-to-price ratio.

Climate and Terroir of the AOC Canon-Fronsac Appellation

  • Climate: The Canon-Fronsac vineyard benefits from a temperate oceanic climate, with warm summers and mild winters, ensuring optimal grape ripening.
  • Soils: The soils of the appellation are characterized by their diversity, with a predominance of limestone and clay, offering an ideal base for the cultivation of Merlot.

Merlot: The Emblematic Grape of the AOC Canon-Fronsac

Merlot, an essential grape variety in Bordeaux's red wines, is the dominant grape variety in the AOC Canon-Fronsac appellation. This red grape gives Canon-Fronsac wines their fruity character and richness. It is often complemented by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec, which add complexity and increased aging potential.

Style of AOC Canon-Fronsac Red Wines

Appearance: The wines have a deep red color, with violet hues.

Nose: The bouquet is rich in aromas of ripe black fruits, such as blackcurrant and blackberry, mixed with woody, vanilla, and mild spicy notes from barrel aging.

Palate: On the palate, AOC Canon-Fronsac offers a beautiful tannic structure, balanced by a natural roundness. The flavors of black fruits blend with woody and spicy touches in a long and velvety finish.

Serving Temperature: 16°-18° Celsius

Aging Potential: AOC Canon-Fronsac red wines can be enjoyed when young for their fruity characteristics, but they gain complexity with aging, reaching a potential aging of 10 to 15 years depending on the estate and vintage.

Canon-Fronsac FAQ: Boundaries, Merchants and Malbec

How were the Canon-Fronsac boundaries drawn?

The Canon-Fronsac boundaries were first drawn by a court ruling of May 19, 1928, then on appeal by the Bordeaux court on July 11, 1932. Landowners in the area won the right to add “Canon” to “Côtes de Fronsac.” The 1932 ruling already left out the palus, the alluvial land along the river.

Why is Canon-Fronsac called the “historic cradle of the great Libournais wines”?

Professor Henri Enjalbert called Canon-Fronsac the “historic cradle of the great wines of the Libournais” (the Libourne area) in 1983. In the late 18th century, Libourne merchants bought estates there. They replaced old vines with carefully chosen grape varieties and aged their wines, which gained in reputation and price.

What does Malbec bring to Canon-Fronsac?

Blended with Merlot and the two Cabernets, Malbec, also called Cot, gives Canon-Fronsac broader tannins, with aromas of small black fruits and licorice. It is the appellation’s fourth most planted grape, after Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It does well in limestone, clay-gravel and clay-limestone soils.

Where can you buy Canon-Fronsac direct from the winemaker?

You can buy Canon-Fronsac direct from the winemaker on Avenue des Vins. Each bottle is shipped by the producer who made it, with no middleman.
