Vignobles Bedrenne: five generations of winegrowers in the heart of the Libournais
The history of Vignobles Bedrenne begins at the start of the 20th century, when the Bedrenne family, originally from the Périgord, settled in Libourne, Gironde, in search of work. At that time, leaving one’s homeland was often the only option in the face of poverty.
Monique Bedrenne’s great-grandfather was recruited as head vineyard manager at Château La Croix, near the former Hospitallers’ church in Lalande-de-Pomerol. His son later purchased vines within the appellation, laying the foundations of the family estate. The following generation diversified the farm, combining vineyards and livestock, before the activity gradually refocused entirely on viticulture.
Through successive marriages and transmissions—always with a single heir—the estate expanded and became firmly established across several key terroirs of the Libournais.
A family estate in constant evolution
In 2005, Monique Bedrenne officially took over the estate. For more than a decade, she worked to preserve the family heritage while bringing a thoughtful and rigorous approach, deeply attentive to living ecosystems.
In recent years, her son Rémi has joined her. Together, they have undertaken a profound transformation of the vineyard:
- implementation of controlled grass cover,
- careful and continuous observation of soils,
- reduction of phytosanitary inputs,
- limiting tractor passes to avoid soil compaction.
A gentler form of viticulture, guided by experience, common sense and long-term vision.
Concrete and recognised environmental commitments
Respect for the environment is now central to the Vignobles Bedrenne project. Several key initiatives have been implemented:
- mechanical weeding without chemical herbicides,
- planting hedgerows in partnership with the ONCFS to promote biodiversity,
- installation of beehives to support pollination,
- development of wines with no added sulphites,
- vineyard management based on the principles of sustainable viticulture.
These commitments led to the estate being awarded HVE Level 4 certification and ISO 14001 certification in 2019, confirming a coherent and comprehensive environmental approach.
Three appellations, one shared standard of excellence
Vignobles Bedrenne now cover 13 hectares, spread across three emblematic Bordeaux appellations:
- Lalande-de-Pomerol,
- Montagne-Saint-Émilion,
- Bordeaux Supérieur.
The Lalande-de-Pomerol vineyard, covering 7.30 hectares, is planted on well-drained soils enriched with organic fertiliser. Low-vigour rootstocks and grape varieties perfectly suited to the terroir promote elegance, balance and ageing potential in the wines.
