Famille & Domaine Masse: More Than Four Centuries of Winemaking Passion in Burgundy

Winemakers from father to son since 1595, the Masse family is one of those rare Burgundian lineages whose history is inseparable from that of the vineyard itself. Located in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, between Givry and Mercurey, the estate embodies an authentic, demanding Burgundy deeply rooted in the spirit of transmission.

Since 2000, Fabrice Masse has taken over the family estate. Heir to a savoir-faire patiently built by his father, grandfather, and previous generations, he pursues a clear objective: to preserve the soul of the domaine while firmly anchoring it in its time.

A Family History Deeply Rooted in Burgundy

The history of the estate begins at the end of the 16th century with Claude Masse, a cooper by trade. After World War II, Jean-Baptiste Masse gave new momentum to the vineyard and initiated its modern development.

His two sons, Raymond and Roland, continued the adventure in their own ways. Raymond ensured the growth of the estate, while Roland became a renowned oenologist and cellar master of the Hospices de Beaune, bringing valuable expertise to the family.

Today, Fabrice Masse, Raymond’s son, carries on this heritage with respect, humility, and ambition, supported by the experience of his uncle Roland.

An Estate in Constant Evolution

True to the spirit of his predecessors, Fabrice Masse has undertaken a complete modernization of the domaine: construction of a new winery, acquisition of a modern sorting table allowing extremely precise grape selection, and renovation of the cellars and aging facilities.

At the same time, the vineyard has expanded through the acquisition of parcels on prestigious Burgundian terroirs. Today, the estate farms approximately 15 hectares of its own vineyards, complemented by a carefully managed négociant activity equivalent to around 15 additional hectares in grapes and musts, enriching the range while maintaining a high level of quality.

A Winemaker’s Philosophy: Precision, Balance, and Elegance

Vineyard management is based on sustainable practices, with constant attention to natural balances: winter cover crops from September to March, no use of fertilizers to naturally control vine vigor, short pruning and rigorous debudding to regulate yields, and regular shallow plowing and soil cultivation.

The objective is clear: to concentrate the vine’s energy into the grapes, revealing the identity of each terroir.

Precise Cellar Work in the Service of Burgundy Style

The harvest is fully destemmed, then meticulously sorted using the sorting table before being immediately cooled. This precision enables Fabrice Masse to craft wines that are elegant, with silky tannins, generous fruit, balance, and faithful expression of Burgundy’s terroirs.

The Appellations and Cuvées of Famille & Domaine Masse

Ideally located in the heart of Burgundy’s winegrowing region, the estate produces a wide range of wines from emblematic Côte Chalonnaise appellations:

Givry and Givry Premier Cru (Champ Lalot, En Choué, Servoisine, Grand Terroir), Mercurey red and white, Montagny Premier Cru, Rully, Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Bourgogne Aligoté “Granit Vieilles Vignes”, and Crémant de Bourgogne.

Each cuvée follows the same guiding principle: purity of fruit, respect for terroir, immediate pleasure, and controlled aging potential.

A Characterful Burgundy, Faithful to Its Roots

Famille & Domaine Masse represents an authentic Burgundy, transmitted with high standards for more than 400 years. An estate where heritage is never frozen, but continuously enriched by each generation, in the service of precise, expressive, and deeply Burgundian wines.
