Château Grand’Grange: The Story of a Revival in the Heart of Beaujolais

The soul of Château Grand’Grange is rooted in over two centuries of history. It all began in 1810, when the estate’s lands were acquired by a close associate of Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1842, the château and its outbuildings were built from local granite, a testament to the region’s natural beauty.

The estate takes its name from a 60-meter-long barn – the “Grand’Grange” – which now houses the winery. Since the 19th century, vineyards have surrounded the château, producing terroir-driven wines that define the Perréon’s reputation.

In 2009, a new chapter began when Per Hakon Schmidt and Marianne Philip, a Danish couple passionate about France and wine, took over the estate. Their mission: to blend heritage with innovation.

An Exceptional Terroir at the Foot of Mont Brouilly

Located in the village of Le Perréon, south of Mont Brouilly, the 12-hectare vineyard enjoys ideal exposure and abundant sunshine. Its sandy-granite soils are renowned for producing wines of finesse and aromatic freshness.

The estate produces Beaujolais Villages, a Fleurie cru, and several IGP Comtés Rhodaniens wines. Two main grape varieties thrive here: Gamay Noir à jus blanc, creating bright, fruit-driven reds, and Chardonnay, yielding delicate, mineral whites.

Under the direction of winemaker Andrea Pugliese since 2019, and alongside Solenn Faure-Chappat, the estate has embraced sustainable viticulture: restructuring plots, limiting inputs, and encouraging biodiversity.

A Sustainable and Forward-Looking Viticulture

Château Grand’Grange practices a reasoned and ecological approach. The vines are tended without herbicides, harvesting is manual, and all decisions aim to maintain natural balance.

The estate also innovates: introducing Syrah – a first in Beaujolais – to adapt to climate change, replanting high-density Gamay, and producing Crémant de Bourgogne since 2022, aged 14 months before release.
