Château de Saint Martin: 2,000 years of living history at the heart of Provence
Some estates are prestigious.
Others transcend centuries without ever losing their soul.
Château de Saint Martin belongs firmly to the latter. Founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC, it is today recognized as one of the oldest vineyards in France. Here, wine is not simply produced—it is the continuation of history.
Between the 10th and 18th centuries, the monks of the Abbey of Lérins established a wine-growing priory and built an exceptional underground cellar dating from the 12th and 16th centuries, still in use today. Very few estates can claim such continuity.
Since 1740, the property has been passed down from generation to generation—often from woman to woman. Today, Adeline de Barry carries this legacy forward with a clear ambition: to tell the story of the estate through sincere, precise wines deeply rooted in their terroir.
A vineyard built on balance and diversity
The estate covers 100 hectares, including 50 hectares dedicated to vines:
40 hectares currently in production
10 hectares left fallow, under crop rotation or being replanted
This deliberate balance preserves soil vitality and encourages a wide range of aromatic expressions. Vines aged between 30 and 80 years grow alongside younger parcels, creating remarkable complexity and depth in the wines.
A palette of grape varieties that reflects Provence
Château de Saint Martin cultivates a broad range of grape varieties, carefully chosen to express the aromatic and sensory richness of Provence.
Each variety is planted according to soil type, exposure and microclimate. This parcel-based approach results in wines that are complex, balanced and elegant—faithful to their origin and never standardized.
A rich and distinctive Provençal terroir
Located at an altitude of 130 meters, the vineyard rests on two distinct geological zones, giving the wines notable depth and complexity.
This natural diversity allows the estate to produce refined, structured rosés, expressive whites and characterful reds, all while preserving freshness and precision.
Regenerative agriculture focused on the future
Château de Saint Martin goes beyond conventional practices. The estate is developing a regenerative form of agriculture, inspired by sustainable, organic and biodynamic viticulture—while forging its own path.
The goals are clear:
drastically reduce chemical inputs
preserve biodiversity
strengthen natural soil fertility
encourage a stable, living agroecosystem
The estate is already working toward the certifications of tomorrow: living soils, low-carbon viticulture, long-term fertility and positive environmental impact.
A natural sanctuary within the vineyard
Biodiversity here is not theoretical—it is measurable and visible:
50% of the land dedicated to vines and inter-row crops
25% left fallow
25% preserved as woodland and natural reserves
a bird protection center for over 50 years
a site classified under Natura 2000
a rich and protected fauna: wild boar, foxes, herons, pheasants, eagle owls, bats, bees and butterflies
The vineyard breathes—and it shows in the glass.
