Champagne Duménil: Premier Cru, vegan, crafted by five generations of artisan winemakers

A family estate rooted in the Montagne de Reims

Across the Premier Cru lands of Chigny-les-Roses, Ludes and Rilly-la-Montagne, the Duménil family cultivates 8 hectares of vines spread over a mosaic of small parcels. This diversity of terroirs brings exceptional aromatic richness, enhanced by decades of sustainable, reasoned viticulture.

Most cuvées are vegan, reflecting a modern, responsible philosophy deeply respectful of nature.

A living heritage since 1874

For nearly 150 years, Maison Duménil has been shaped by strong personalities, each leaving an indelible mark:

  • – Frédérique, today at the helm, crafting wines of great precision and undeniable elegance.
  • – Michel, creator of the perpetual reserve, who gave Duménil its fruity identity and aromatic consistency.
  • – Cécile, a bold pioneer, who planted Chardonnay in Chigny-les-Roses in 1969—a revolution for the village.
  • – And before them, generations who cultivated patient, artisanal savoir-faire.

A Premier Cru terroir shaped by time

The soils of the Montagne de Reims form a unique patchwork: chalk, marl, loam, sand and fine clays.

Beneath the surface, natural springs nourish the vineyard, giving the wines their pure, signature minerality typical of Chigny-les-Roses.

The north-facing slopes ensure slow ripening, ideal for preserving the freshness, tension and finesse that define the house style.

Winemaker’s secrets: Duménil’s artisanal precision

In the vineyard: patience, precision and manual work

Being a winegrower at Duménil means cultivating detail. Every gesture is intentional: daily observation, parcel-specific soil care, minimal intervention, and strictly hand-harvested, carefully sorted grapes.

The Duménil style begins here, in the vines, in the intimate relationship between people and terroir.

In the cellar: preserving the purity of the fruit

Hand harvesting
Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel.

Meticulous pressing
Two Coquard inclined-plate presses ensure slow, precise extraction.
The motto: “Picked and pressed immediately.”

Vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel
Each parcel is vinified separately to preserve its original aromas. No unnecessary contact with oxygen.

Blending: the art of balance
Careful tasting of each base wine allows the creation of a subtle harmony between fruit, structure and freshness.
“Diversity enriches wine as much as the mind.”

Riddling & prise de mousse
Gyropalettes ensure precision and consistency, complemented by selective manual riddling.

Tailored dosage
The domaine produces its own collection of vintage liqueurs. Each cuvée receives a specific liqueur designed to blend perfectly with the wine.
“Dosage is the final touch that enhances aromatic intensity.”

In the cellar: time as an ally

Lengthy ageing on lees shapes wines capable of gracefully maturing over the years. The house is renowned for its vintages and the quality of its carefully preserved reserve wines used to enrich future blends.

Humble before nature: a philosophy passed down

At Duménil, the vine is a living being. Observing, listening, understanding—these sensitive gestures are transmitted from generation to generation.

Today’s decisions rely on yesterday’s experience and a long-term vision. Planting a vine here means thinking forty years ahead.

A global and sustainable vision of the craft

Maison Duménil goes beyond certifications (HVE 3, Sustainable Viticulture, pesticide-free residues) to embrace a profound, coherent approach to living soils.

Every decision—regarding soils, vines, water or biodiversity—is guided by the desire to preserve and sustain this exceptional terroir.

A unique style: fruity, fresh, generous, mature, balanced

Duménil champagnes are unmistakable:

  • – fruitiness from Premier Cru Meunier,
  • – natural freshness from the north-facing slopes,
  • – richness from expressive blends,
  • – maturity from long ageing,
  • – balance from assembling micro-parcels with precision.
