Great white wines: your questions
Which white wine makes a good gift for a wine lover?
A Meursault or a Condrieu rarely misses: recognised appellations, styles you can place at first sip. For someone who likes taut wines, choose Chablis. For the end of a meal, Sauternes.
What is the difference between Chablis and Meursault?
Same grape, Chardonnay, but little else in common. Chablis comes from northern Burgundy on limestone, and is taut, mineral, barely oaked. Meursault, in the Côte de Beaune, is barrel-aged: fuller, with butter and hazelnut.
How long do great white wines keep?
Five to fifteen years for a top white Burgundy, depending on vintage and appellation. Sweet wines such as Sauternes last far longer. Store bottles lying down, at a steady temperature, away from light.
What temperature should a great white be served at?
10 to 12 °C, warmer than an everyday white. Served ice-cold, a Meursault or a Condrieu gives nothing away: the chill locks in the very aromas you paid for.
Should you decant a white wine?
A young great white often benefits. Fifteen to thirty minutes in a decanter is enough to open it. For a wine of ten years or more, simply uncork it ahead of time.
Do these bottles come from the estate?
Yes. Each one leaves the producer's cellar when your order comes in. On ageing wines at this level, that is the best guarantee the bottle has been kept as it should be.
