Covering more than 65,000 hectares of vines, the Rhône Valley is France's second-largest wine region, spanning six départements between Vienne and Avignon. AOC Grignan-les-Adhémar sits within it, known as Coteaux du Tricastin until 2010. The appellation lies on the left bank of the Rhône, between Montélimar and Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux, across some 970 hectares of clay, limestone and sandy soils. Grenache, Carignan, Syrah, Clairette and Roussanne, among others, grow under a Mediterranean climate and produce wines in all three colours. Distinctive, powerful and elegant, they are marked above all by fruit. A profile close to that of Côtes du Rhône, often at gentler prices.

Frequently asked questions about AOC Grignan-Les-Adhémar

Why did the appellation change its name in 2010?

It had been called Coteaux du Tricastin since 1973. The Tricastin nuclear complex was built alongside it the following year, and for decades the growers saw their appellation confused with it. In 2010 the INAO granted them a rare authorisation: to rename the AOC after two communes of the Drôme, Grignan and les Adhémar. The vineyard, the grape varieties and the terroir did not change, only the name on the label.

How does it differ from a Côtes du Rhône?

The grape varieties are largely the same, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, and the area sits just north-east of the southern Côtes du Rhône. What differs is reputation. Grignan-les-Adhémar is a small appellation of around 970 hectares in production, where Côtes du Rhône covers tens of thousands. At comparable quality, the gap shows up in the price rather than in the glass.

Do these wines age?

The more structured reds, built on Syrah and Mourvèdre, will hold five to eight years and gain garrigue and spice notes as they go. Lighter cuvées are at their best within three years, while the fruit is forward. Rosés and whites should be opened within a year of the vintage, while the freshness is still intact.

At what temperature should they be served?

Reds between 15 and 17°C, never at the ambient temperature of a heated room, where the alcohol takes over from the fruit. Whites and rosés between 8 and 10°C, taken out of the fridge a quarter of an hour before the meal.
