Spanning more than 65,000 hectares of vineyards, the Rhône Valley wine region is France's second largest AOC wine region, covering six departments between Vienne and Avignon. It includes the Côtes du Rhône Villages Visan AOC. The appellation area of this AOC covers the municipality of Visan (Vaucluse) with its clay, limestone, and gravel soils. Clairette, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah vines, among others, are subject to the Mediterranean climate of this geographical area and are used to produce white, rosé, and red wines. Unlike the latter, which have good aging potential, white and rosé wines are best drunk young.

Visan: A Red-Wine Vineyard Making Room for Whites and Rosés

In Visan, vines fill the plain below the village, then climb the surrounding hills toward the well-exposed slopes. Long devoted to red wine, the vineyard now gives more room to white grapes, and more and more rosé is made here, according to Inter Rhône.

The Visan Winegrowers' Brotherhood, Founded in 1475

Vines go back a long way in Visan. Excavations here have turned up fragments of amphorae and traces of a Gallo-Roman settlement, and Inter Rhône, the Rhône Valley wine trade body, dates the first vines to the 3rd century, under Emperor Probus. By the 13th century, according to the same source, the village already had a communal wine press.

In 1475, Visan's winegrowers' guild founded its brotherhood, or confrérie. It stayed active for more than three centuries, until a decree put it on hold in 1792. It was revived in 1978, at the village's first wine festival.

Since then, its members have walked in procession to the Notre-Dame-des-Vignes chapel, east of the village, at their winter and summer gatherings. According to Inter Rhône, at the summer gathering they have a vine stock blessed there, then burned on the Place du Marot during the dance of the "souco," Provençal for vine stump.

Style of AOC Côtes du Rhône Villages Visan wines

  • Red wine: Generally deep, intense red color. The aromas evoke ripe black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberries), spices, and sometimes notes of garrigue or licorice. On the palate, these wines offer a beautiful structure with present but elegant tannins. They give off a controlled power, accompanied by a pleasant roundness.
  • White wine: Pale gold color. The nose reveals aromas of white flowers (acacia), white-fleshed fruits, honey and citrus fruits. On the palate, these white wines combine typically southern roundness with a hint of freshness.
  • Rosé wine: Pale to deep pink color depending on the estate and the vinification method. The bouquet presents notes of small red fruits (strawberry, redcurrant), flowers and citrus fruits (grapefruit). The palate is fresh and tender, ideal for summer aperitifs.
