Vinsobres, a Cru of the Drôme Provençale

Vinsobres has been a Côtes du Rhône cru since 2006, the first village in the Drôme Provençale to earn that rank. Its vineyards were already part of the Côtes du Rhône appellation in 1937. The village name was added to the appellation in 1957, and in 1966 Vinsobres was among the first Côtes du Rhône Villages.

White Vinsobres: A Style Recognized in 2026

Since June 2026, the Vinsobres appellation has also covered still white wines. Its reputation was built on red, and now a white wine can carry the village name too. Rosé, however, is not allowed under the Vinsobres name.

White Vinsobres is built on five main grapes: Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier. They make up most of the blend, and the appellation generally reserves at least three quarters of the white plantings for them. Six minor grapes can round them out, including Bourboulenc, Piquepoul Blanc and Vermentino.

The white shares the red's delimited area, 1,375 hectares (about 3,400 acres), and the same vineyard standards. Its yield is capped at 40 hectoliters per hectare, versus 38 for the red.

Elevation and moderate sun exposure let white grapes ripen gradually, which preserves their floral and white-fleshed fruit aromas. Pale with green glints, the wine aims for a balance of freshness and body.

History of the AOC Vinsobres

AOC Vinsobres, a gem of Drôme Provençale, is distinguished by the quality of its robust and elegant red wines. Framed by majestic mountains and benefiting from a Mediterranean climate tempered by altitude, this appellation is home to exceptional wines that reflect a rich history and unique terroir. Although Vinsobres' winemaking history dates back to Roman times, it wasn’t until 2006 that Vinsobres was officially recognized as an AOC, solidifying its status among the red wines of the Rhône Valley. This recognition is the result of the hard work of local winemakers, who, generation after generation, have elevated this exceptional terroir.

Climate and Terroir of the AOC Vinsobres

  • Climate: The Vinsobres vineyard stretches across moderate slopes, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate with a significant influence from the northern winds.

  • Soils: The primarily clay-limestone and stony terroir gives Vinsobres wines a remarkable freshness and aromatic complexity.

Grape Varieties of the AOC Vinsobres

AOC Vinsobres is primarily dedicated to red wine production, mainly from Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. Grenache, which dominates the blends, brings fruitiness and roundness, while Syrah and Mourvèdre contribute to the complexity and structure of AOC Vinsobres red wines.

Style of AOC Vinsobres Wines

Appearance: Vinsobres wines are deeply colored, ranging from ruby red to dark purple, a sign of their concentration.

Aroma: The nose offers a fascinating aromatic complexity, blending notes of ripe black fruits, kirsch, spices, and sometimes licorice or violet.

Palate: On the palate, they reveal a well-structured tannic presence, yet elegant, with a long and slightly smoky finish.

Serving Temperature: Ideally served between 16°C and 18°C (60°F and 64°F), they reveal their full richness and balance.

Aging Potential: AOC Vinsobres red wines have excellent aging potential, ranging from 5 to 10 years, or even more, depending on the estate and vintage.

Vinsobres, From Its Name to Its Release Date

When can a red Vinsobres go on sale?

A red Vinsobres can be sold to consumers from March 31 of the year after the harvest. It ages until at least March 15, which strengthens and stabilizes its structure. This date does not apply to white Vinsobres.

Where does the name Vinsobres come from?

The name Vinsobres is said to come from its vine-covered hillsides, as the bishop of Vaison wrote in Latin verse in 1633. He is also credited with the village motto, "Vinsobres ou Sobre Vins, prenez-le sobrement" ("Vinsobres or sober wine, drink it soberly"). In Roman times, the place was already called "Vinsobrium."

Why did vines replace olive trees in Vinsobres?

In Vinsobres, vines replaced olive trees after the 1956 freeze, which devastated the olive harvest. The village's vineyard grew from 484 hectares (about 1,200 acres) that year to 820 hectares (about 2,030 acres) by 1965.

Where can you buy Vinsobres direct from the winemaker?

You can buy Vinsobres direct from the winemaker on Avenue des Vins. Your order ships straight from the producer, with no middleman.
