Listening to the Vine: The Philosophy of Château du Bois-Huaut
At Château du Bois-Huaut, our philosophy is rooted in one essential principle: the quality of the grapes. By harvesting only healthy, fully ripe fruit, we create wines with remarkable concentration, elegance, and authenticity. This excellence stems from our rich terroir, a favorable climate, ideal vineyard exposure, and a meticulous savoir-faire passed down through generations.
Hand Harvesting – A Rare Tradition in the Nantes Vineyard
While less than 1% of the Nantes vineyard is still hand-harvested today, we proudly continue this tradition. Manual picking allows us to maintain consistent quality, leaving nothing to chance. Each year, our team of around thirty pickers carefully selects the finest bunches, ensuring that only the best grapes are brought to the cellar.
Five Generations of Family Passion
For over five generations, Château du Bois-Huaut has remained in the same family line—from the Brin family to the Lussauds, and today, the Duret family. Originally a small mixed farm, the estate gradually specialized in viticulture, moving to direct sales in 1984 with the arrival of Stéphane Duret. Over the decades, the vineyard expanded to 24 hectares and now cultivates 14 different grape varieties. In 2016, Luis Duret brought a modern touch to the estate by completely renovating the tasting room—creating a warm, comfortable, and welcoming space where visitors can explore their favorites from our wide range of wines.
A Terroir of Exceptional Diversity
Our 24 hectares of vines stretch across three communes: Gorges, Mouzillon, and Clisson—each with distinct soil profiles.
- Clisson: Clay soils rich in flint, with granite bedrock.
- Gorges: Clay-silica soils with granite veins and mica schist over a gabbro base.
- Mouzillon: Clay-loam soils with gabbro bedrock.
This geological diversity gives each of our wines its own unique character. Since 1897, we have harvested exclusively by hand, honoring our deep connection to the land.
From Vineyard to Cellar – Crafting Wines with Character
We believe that wine is made in the vineyard, not the cellar. Every stage—planting, pruning, canopy management, soil care, and harvesting—is carried out with precision to ensure the best possible fruit. In 2010, we modernized our winery with a pneumatic press for gentle extraction and a temperature-control system for slow fermentations, resulting in refined, aromatic wines.
