Château de Chaintres – Historic Clos and Characterful Wines from Saumur-Champigny
A Heritage Founded by the Oratorians (1675). In the heart of the Saumur-Champigny appellation, Château de Chaintres showcases a rare heritage: a walled vineyard (clos) built by the Oratorian Fathers in 1675. The wall creates a unique microclimate that enhances the expression of Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc on soils of tuffeau limestone, clay, and sand.
Three Generations Dedicated to Quality and Life
For three generations, the de Tigny family has crafted wines renowned for their precision and elegance. Certified organic since 2013 and farmed biodynamically (Demeter and Biodyvin certified parcels), the estate’s philosophy is simple: protect biodiversity and let the terroir speak for itself.
Historical Timeline
- 16th century: “Logis de Chaintres” owned by the Guyelet family.
- 1675: Oratorian Fathers plant vines and build the clos — a local landmark.
- Revolution: property changes hands, but the great clos is preserved.
- 1937–1945: Charles Balouzet de Tigny purchases the estate; a WWII Resistance member, he dies in deportation. His wife Colleen revives the vineyard and founds the “Domaine Vinicole de Chaintres.”
- 1960–1964: Gaël de Tigny develops estate bottling and builds the Saumur-Champigny reputation.
- Since 2010: Élisabeth B. de Tigny Mourot modernizes, expands exports, converts to organic and biodynamics, and creates the ex-murus line in 2019.
Terroirs: Tuffeau, Clay, Sand – Precision and Freshness
- Tuffeau limestone: tension, saline minerality, chalky finesse.
- Clay: depth, volume, and structure.
- Sand and silica: aromatic delicacy, crunchy fruit.
This diversity, balanced by moderate water retention and limited yields, gives wines of clarity, depth, and freshness.
Philosophy: Wine of Place, Not Recipe
The estate follows a gentle, minimalist approach: hand-harvesting by parcel, double sorting, native yeasts, low sulfur, no chaptalization or fining. Long lees aging nourishes and stabilizes the wines naturally. The goal: to taste the soil in every glass.
Organic and Biodynamic Practices
- Massal selection to preserve genetic diversity.
- Home compost and soil care to promote living humus.
- Grass cover every other row; horse plowing on terraces.
- Biodynamic preparations (500/501) and herbal teas of nettle, horsetail, willow, and valerian.
- Minimal copper and sulfur use.
- Harvest and bottling timed to lunar cycles when appropriate.
Signature Cuvées
- BDN1 – Blanc de Noirs (100% Cabernet Franc): juicy freshness, white fruit and citrus, saline finish — a chic Loire anomaly.
- Les Hirondelles: bright rosé, spiced red berry nose, mineral finish — perfect for aperitifs or poultry.
- Dames de Chaintres (100% Chenin): golden hue, fresh citrus, chalky backbone, long finish with fine spice.
- Clos des Oratoriens: hand-harvested, oak and amphora aged, pure black fruit, silky tannins — the signature wine.
- Vieilles Vignes: red fruits, broad texture, partial lees aging without SO₂ — a table wine for fine tables.
- Les Genêts: pale gold, white fruit, lemon zest, creamy texture, mineral finish.
- Les Sables (Demeter & Biodyvin): garnet red, fresh fruit, gentle spice, dangerously drinkable.
- Colleen Chanteclair (traditional method): fine bubbles, vine peach, lime blossom, citrus zest — from aperitif to dessert.
