Which Wine to Pair with Roquefort Cheese?

A true icon of French gastronomy, Roquefort is renowned for its intense aroma, salty and lingering flavor, and creamy texture. Made from sheep’s milk, aged in the natural caves of the Causses of Roquefort, and enriched with Penicillium roqueforti, this cheese from the Aveyron region is one of the oldest and most prestigious cheeses in France. But which wine should you pair with Roquefort? What pairings will enhance its bold character? Here’s a complete guide to choosing the right wine for this unique and powerful cheese.

Roquefort: A One-of-a-Kind Cheese

Roquefort is born in the heart of Aveyron, in the limestone caves of the Causses and Cévennes National Park, where the soil, altitude, and cave temperatures are uniquely suited for its development. This exceptional terroir and artisanal know-how give the cheese its singular character. The wine you pair with it should be selected with equal care to preserve the integrity of this cultural and sensory heritage.

Roquefort: A Bold and Salty Cheese

Roquefort’s richness, saltiness, and slightly sharp flavors demand a wine that can soften and balance its intensity. Sweet wines, with notes of red fruits, honey, or candied fruits, are traditional companions to this robust cheese. Their roundness and smooth texture create a perfect harmony with Roquefort, especially when served at the end of a meal.

Best Wine Pairings with Roquefort

Sweet and Dessert Whites: The Classic Match

Pairing Roquefort with a sweet white wine remains a timeless and reliable choice. Late harvest wines from Alsace, such as Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives or Pinot Gris Sélection de Grains Nobles, offer just the right level of sweetness, balanced by acidity to complement Roquefort’s saltiness. Sweet Red Fortified Wines: A Perfect Pairing

Less well-known but just as effective, sweet red fortified wines like Maury, Banyuls, or AOC Rivesaltes from the South of France pair especially well with Roquefort. Their flavors of ripe red fruits, sometimes jammy, and their full-bodied texture make them a warm alternative to sweet white wines. The contrast between the sweetness and the saltiness of the cheese creates a deliciously bold and original pairing.

Why not try a dry red wine?

Although dry red wine is less commonly paired with Roquefort, certain well-chosen reds can offer a beautiful complement. A well-ripened Cabernet Sauvignon, with soft tannins and generous structure, can stand up to the strong flavor of the cheese. However, it’s best to avoid reds that are too young or overly tannic, as they could create an imbalance and intensify the cheese’s bitterness.

Pairings based on accompaniments

• With a slice of Roquefort and dried figs: a Gewürztraminer “Grains Nobles” or a Vin de Paille will make for an excellent food and wine pairing.
• With Roquefort and walnut bread: a velvety-textured Maury red will be an excellent option.
• In a salad with endives, apples, and walnuts: a semi-dry white wine can offer a pleasant contrast.

Pairing wine with Roquefort is, above all, a matter of flavor harmony. Sweet, luscious wines or natural sweet reds are the best allies of this famous cheese, but smooth red wines or dry white wines can also work well, depending on your preferences. Let’s not forget that every pairing is personal: the key is to find the match that delights your taste buds and enhances this bold sheep’s milk cheese.
