How did the story of the estate begin?

A Rich Family History

The adventure began in 1905 when Victor Ponty, Hélène’s great-grandfather, left his native Corrèze to pursue his dream of becoming a winemaker. Successive generations have led the estate with the same philosophy: making the right choices rather than the easiest ones to produce wines with a distinct identity, characterized by fruitiness and finesse.

Hélène Ponty: The First Woman at the Helm

Since 2019, Hélène Ponty, the fifth generation, has taken over the reins of the estate, continuing the family values. Upon taking charge, Hélène immediately converted the vineyards to organic farming and conducted biodynamic trials (without certification) to respect biodiversity and soil health. Hélène’s focus is resolutely on the future of the estate. Thus, other grape varieties besides Merlot (which makes up 90% of the vineyard), such as Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and some white varieties, have been planted to introduce more diversity.

Although Hélène is the first woman to lead Vignobles Ponty, women have always played a significant role in the estate’s destiny. For example, Château Grand Renouil, one of the estate’s most beautiful plots, was purchased by Jean Ponty (Hélène’s grandfather) using the dowry from his wife’s family! Additionally, Victor Ponty settled on these lands not only out of love for wine but also for the charming schoolteacher he married!
