Muscat: origins and particularities of this grape variety

Whether we are talking about Muscat of Alexandria, Muscat Petits Grains, Muscat Ottonel or Muscat of Hamburg, Muscat remains one of the most famous families of grape varieties in France and the Mediterranean region. Consumed as table grapes as well as vinified into dry, sweet or sparkling white wine, Muscat has seduced us since antiquity with its very charming and aromatic profile. Description and origins of Muscat

Muscat is a family of white grape varieties, probably originating from Greece. It is very widespread in Mediterranean countries, particularly in France, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal. This very old white grape variety has been known since Antiquity, where it developed throughout Europe thanks to the Roman conquests. Today, Muscat is also present in the countries of the New World from Australia to Chile via South Africa, making it one of the most planted white grape varieties in the world. However, if in common language, we speak of Muscat as a grape variety in its own right, there are in reality a multitude of varieties of Muscat (around 150 according to some ampelographic studies) of which the best known are Muscat of Alexandria, Muscat Petits Grains, Muscat Ottonel and Muscat of Hamburg.

The main terroirs where Muscat is cultivated in France

Present in Alsace, Languedoc-Roussillon, the Rhone Valley, Corsica and Provence, Muscat is a versatile grape variety that adapts to Mediterranean and continental climates. In addition to being present in many vineyards in France, Muscat also comes in several forms. Indeed, it is often found vinified as dry white wine, sweet white wine (late harvest, selection of noble grains, passerillage or mutage) and sparkling wine (mainly produced using the ancestral method in the AOC Clairette-de-Die appellation). Among these flagship appellations, we can mention the AOC Muscat-de-Rivesaltes, AOC Muscat-de-beaume-de-venise, AOC Muscat-de-Frontignan, AOC Muscat-du-cap-corse and AOC Alsace Muscat where it is one of the 4 noble grape varieties alongside Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris.

Aromatic characteristics of muscat

Very often vinified as a single grape variety in the white wines of Alsace or Languedoc-Roussillon, muscat can also be blended with other grape varieties to bring its fruity and exuberant side to the blends.

Characteristics of dry muscat:

Eye: Pale yellow and clear color.

Nose: Very aromatic on the nose, it develops notes of citrus fruits, fresh grapes, exotic fruits (guava), and flowers.

Palate: Fresh and exuberant at the same time, the palate restores the aromas of the nose with a tangy side.

Characteristics of sweet muscat:

Eye: Deep golden color with sometimes amber reflections (after a few years of aging).

Nose: Notes of candied fruits, dried apricot, honey, raisins and citrus peel.

Palate: Often generous in alcohol (natural sweet wines from mutage) and powerful, sweet white wines made from muscat offer a creamy texture and rich aromas reminiscent of honey and marmalade.

Characteristics of muscat in sparkling wine (ancestral method):

Eye: Pale color and light bubbles that rise in the glass.

Nose: Aromatic palette of apple, fresh grape and peach.

Palate: With its low alcohol content and low concentration of residual sugars, the palate is fruity, tender and light.
