Start with the grape variety, when the label lists it. Native grapes, long grown in just a few regions, often make wines that stand apart: Mauzac in Gaillac and Limoux, Loin de l’Œil in Gaillac, Petit and Gros Manseng in southwest France, Picpoul along the Thau lagoon near the Mediterranean. Next, check the place name. Alongside the big AOCs, France has small IGPs tied to a single valley or a narrow area, like IGP Haute Vallée de l’Orb in the Hérault.
