Which Wine Makes the Best Mulled Wine?
A good mulled wine starts with the bottle. You need a soft, fruity red with gentle tannins, around 12.5 to 13.5% vol. Heated with cinnamon, orange and sugar, it keeps its fruit instead of turning bitter.
This selection brings together reds chosen on that basis, bought at the estate and shipped by the winemaker.
The kind of wine we look for
Round reds, on red fruit and spice, with tannins that do not harden when heated. Grenache and Syrah meet that brief well, on their own or blended with other grapes of the same profile. A young wine works better than an older vintage, whose fruit has faded.
The filters sort by grape, appellation, region or farming method, including certified organic cuvées.
Bottles to keep for the table
A very tannic red, or one aged for a long time in oak, loses its structure when heated and turns astringent. A wine high in alcohol leaves a burning sensation once warm. Keep those bottles for the table, for instance with our wines for winter dishes.
For mulled wine, choose a red you would happily drink as it is, slightly chilled. Our light, fruity reds widen the choice if this selection is not enough.
From the estate to your saucepan
The wine leaves directly from the estate, stored in the winemaker's own conditions, with no warehouse in between. For the recipe itself, sugar, spices and infusion time, our article Which wine to use for mulled wine? covers the question from start to finish.
Frequently asked questions about mulled wine
How many bottles do I need for mulled wine?
A 75 cl bottle makes four to five cups once the sugar and orange are added. For a table of ten, allow two bottles for one round, three if you plan to top up.
Can these wines be drunk as they are?
Yes. They are food-friendly reds, chosen because they are good before they are heated. Any bottles left after the holidays go well with a charcuterie board or a cheese platter.
Does this selection include organic wines?
The "Farming method" filter isolates in one click the certified organic or biodynamic cuvées currently in the selection.
How does delivery work if I order from several winemakers?
Each winemaker prepares and ships their bottles from the estate, in their own storage conditions. Shipping is therefore charged per winemaker, from €4.90 in France, and is free from €300 of purchases at the same estate.
Where can I find the recipe and spice quantities?
This page helps you choose the bottle. For sugar, spices, infusion time and the white-wine version, read our article Which wine to use for mulled wine?, which covers the recipe from start to finish.
