Frequently asked questions about Chablis wines
What makes Chablis different from other Burgundy white wines ?
Chablis stands apart thanks to its unique Kimmeridgian soil, fossilised marine limestone that gives the wine its characteristic saline and iodine minerality. Predominantly vinified in stainless steel tanks, it preserves its purity, freshness and natural tension. It is the only great Chardonnay in the world to express such a distinctive marine minerality.
Which Chablis should I choose to pair with oysters or seafood ?
For oysters and seafood, a Chablis Village or a Petit Chablis is ideal: fresh, lively and mineral, it naturally complements the briny flavours of shellfish. For lobster or langoustine, step up to a Chablis Premier Cru Fourchaume or Montée de Tonnerre, more structured and persistent on the palate.
What is the difference between Chablis, Premier Cru and Grand Cru ?
Chablis Village is fresh, lively and immediately enjoyable, perfect as an aperitif or with a light meal. Chablis Premier Cru comes from 40 classified lieux-dits, offering greater complexity and structure. Chablis Grand Cru represents the pinnacle of the appellation, 7 exceptional crus on the right bank of the Serein, wines built for ageing with remarkable depth.
How much does a good Chablis cost ?
A Petit Chablis ranges from €10 to €15. A Chablis Village from €15 to €25. A Chablis Premier Cru from €25 to €50 depending on the lieu-dit and vintage. A Chablis Grand Cru starts at €40 and can exceed €100 for prestigious cuvées. At Avenue des Vins, you buy directly from the winemaker, no middleman, at the right price.
How long can you keep a Chablis ?
A Petit Chablis is best enjoyed within 2 to 3 years of harvest. A Chablis Village can be kept for 3 to 5 years. A Chablis Premier Cru reaches its peak between 5 and 10 years. A Chablis Grand Cru from a great vintage can be kept for 10 to 20 years, revealing exceptional complexity and depth.
Should Chablis be served chilled or at room temperature ?
Chablis is best served chilled, between 10 and 13°C. Too cold, it loses its aromas; too warm, it loses its characteristic freshness and tension. For an aged Chablis Grand Cru, you can serve up to 13-14°C to allow its full aromatic complexity to express itself.
Can I order Chablis wines with delivery across France and Europe ?
Yes. Avenue des Vins delivers its Chablis wines anywhere in mainland France and across Europe, directly from the winemaker's estate. Petit Chablis, Chablis Village, Premier Cru or Grand Cru, all our Burgundy cuvées are carefully packaged and shipped at the best quality-to-price ratio.
