Burgundy, in east-central France, is one of France's oldest wine-growing regions, renowned for its great growths. The AOC Santenay is located in the Côte de Beaune, on 330 hectares of mainly marly and limestone soils. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines are planted in this appellation, which produces both white and red wines (12 of which are classified Premier Cru). The red wines are good for laying down, round and soft on the palate, with the typical Pinot Noir bouquet of red fruit, flowers (violet and rose) and licorice. White wines are fresh, mineral and full-bodied, with floral and citrus notes.

Santenay: Between Vines and Thermal Springs
Santenay belongs to the Côte de Beaune, but its appellation area runs past the Côte-d'Or line into neighboring Saône-et-Loire. Straddling two French départements, the vineyard also sits at a crossroads of plateaus, plain and valley.
An East-Facing Slope Between the Hautes-Côtes and the Bresse Plain
Overall, the appellation's terrain faces east. It sits between two landscapes: the limestone plateaus of the Hautes-Côtes to the west and the Bresse plain to the east. The vines grow on the slope between them.
Grayish limestone caps the upper slopes, up to about 1,640 feet (500 m); lower down, to around 985 feet (300 m), come oolitic limestone and marl.
The village lies at the edge of a valley that forms a major route linking the Rhône corridor, the southern Morvan hills and the Loire country.
Farther south, the Côte de Beaune runs on a little longer: the Maranges appellation forms its southern tip.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: Emblematic Grape Varieties of the AOC Santenay
In Santenay, as in the rest of Burgundy, Pinot Noir reigns supreme for red wines, offering fine wines with aromas of red and black fruits, and an elegant structure. Chardonnay, used for white wines, expresses all its splendor, with fresh, mineral, and sometimes floral wines, reflecting the richness of the Santenay terroir.
Style of AOC Santenay Wine
Red Wine: The red wines of Santenay have a ruby color, with aromas of cherry, raspberry, sometimes nuanced with spicy or floral notes. The palate is structured, with fine tannins and a beautiful length, suggesting good aging potential.
White Wine: The white wines have a light golden color, with an expressive nose of white flowers, citrus fruits, and minerality. On the palate, the balance between refreshing acidity and roundness makes these white wines very versatile at the table.

Why Is Santenay Known for Its Waters?
Santenay owes its spa reputation to a salt spring that has drawn people seeking treatment throughout its history. The Burgundy wine trade body sums up this double calling, spa town and wine village, with an image: the water nymph and the god of wine.
How Does Remigny Fit Into the Santenay Appellation?
Remigny, the village next to Santenay, lies within the Santenay appellation area. According to the Burgundy wine trade body, the terroir carries on from Santenay into Remigny, and the wines show noticeable differences depending on the hillside they come from.
What Aromas Does Red Santenay Develop With Age?
With age, red Santenay can suggest brandied cherries, forest floor or dried tobacco, according to the appellation's INAO profile. Younger, it often shows strawberry or cherry fruit with a hint of violet. When these notes appear depends on the wine and the vintage.
