Ancient roots and a strong family history
The first traces of the vine in Escolives-Sainte-Camille date back to the 2nd century, in Roman times. The archaeological remains bear witness to this ancient presence, and the César grape, still used today in the wines of Irancy, is its direct legacy.
The Verret family's winegrowing history truly begins around 1750. At that time, the Yonne was among the great French vineyards, with nearly 40,000 hectares of vines in the mid-19th century, before phylloxera lastingly upended the wine landscape. Despite the crises, the wars and the collapse of the local vineyard, the Verret family chose to stay faithful to the vine. A loyalty held generation after generation.
1956: a visionary choice
In 1956, while the majority of growers still sold their wine in bulk to merchants, Georges and Josiane Verret made a founding decision: to bottle their own production.
This bold choice marked a decisive turning point. The Verret name gradually established itself, associated with a demand for quality and the enhancement of the Burgundy terroirs. This philosophy remains intact today.
A Burgundy estate of scale and precision
Domaine Verret today farms nearly 60 hectares of vines, spread over the terroirs of the Grand Auxerrois and Chablis. A rare size in Burgundy, which makes it possible to combine diversity of expressions and a high level of precision.
The grapes grown reflect all the richness of the local vineyard: Chardonnay, the pillar of the great Burgundy whites; Pinot Noir, fine and elegant; Sauvignon Blanc, the signature of the Saint-Bris appellation; César, the historic Irancy grape; as well as Gamay, Aligoté and Sacy, witnesses of the regional diversity. Each grape is planted on the most suitable plots, in perfect harmony with the soil and the climate.
Terroir above all: the DNA of Domaine Verret
At Domaine Verret, terroir is not a marketing word, but a daily reality. It is born of the alchemy between geology, climate and human know-how. The soils mix limestones, marls and Kimmeridgian formations, under a semi-continental climate with cold winters and hot summers.
This natural setting is enhanced by an experience passed on and refined over the generations. The harvest takes place in September or October, when the aromatic ripeness and the natural balance of the grapes are reached. Each vintage thus faithfully reflects its year and its place of origin.
Emblematic Burgundy appellations
Domaine Verret crafts wines known for their straightness, their freshness and their ageing potential, across several major appellations: Saint-Bris, the only Sauvignon appellation in Burgundy; Irancy, enriched by the addition of the César grape; Chablis and Chablis Premier Cru Beauroy, mineral and taut expressions of Chardonnay.
Precise, readable wines, aimed both at enlightened enthusiasts and at those who wish to discover Burgundy differently. The selection on show changes with the vintages.
Saint-Bris
AOC Saint-Bris: the only Sauvignon Blanc appellation in Burgundy, lively and aromatic.
Irancy (oak barrel)
