Domaine de la Ferrandière – When vines rise from water
Some terroirs are chosen. Others impose themselves as an obvious truth. Domaine de la Ferrandière belongs to the latter. Here, vines grow where water once ruled for centuries. A former drained lake, saline soils, a singular landscape… and a promise: to produce wines unlike any others.
100 unique hectares in the heart of Languedoc
The estate covers 100 hectares, acquired in 2013 by Jean-Claude Mas, a recognised visionary of Languedoc. Located between the Corbières and Minervois appellations, near Carcassonne and less than 40 kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea, the vineyard lies within the former Étang de Marseillette.
As early as the 18th century, this territory was shaped by human ingenuity through an elaborate network of canals inspired by Italy. To this day, water structures the landscape and deeply influences vine life. The scenery is striking, almost unreal, giving the estate a strong and instantly recognisable identity.
A rare terroir, naturally protected
The saline soils of Domaine de la Ferrandière represent a true viticultural exception. Naturally resistant to phylloxera, they allow the cultivation of ungrafted vines, a privilege that has become extremely rare.
To maintain soil balance, the vineyards are flooded during winter in order to reduce excess salinity. This estate-specific practice illustrates a respectful and intelligent approach to viticulture, perfectly adapted to this extraordinary terroir.
A surprising microclimate, a source of balance
Despite its very low altitude, the vineyard benefits from significant diurnal temperature variations. Days are warm and bright, while nights remain cool. This temperature contrast slows grape ripening and preserves natural acidity.
In the glass, this translates into precise, taut and elegant wines, where freshness perfectly balances the richness of the fruit.
A mosaic of grape varieties, a freedom of creation
Domaine de la Ferrandière cultivates no fewer than 18 grape varieties, combining southern traditions with more northern influences. Merlot, Malbec, Marselan, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, as well as the three Pinots (Noir, Gris and Blanc), coexist on this singular terroir.
This diversity makes it possible to produce expressive white and red wines, in which each grape variety naturally finds its place, supported by the soil’s minerality and the signature of the site.
The Ferrandière signature: purity and sincerity
The wines of the estate stand out for their clarity and elegance. Nothing excessive, nothing artificial. The terroir speaks with honesty, offering balanced, vibrant and deeply distinctive cuvées, from the Grand Vin Blanc to the red wines.
How do saline soils and ungrafted vines influence the style of Domaine de la Ferrandière wines ?
The saline soils and ungrafted vines at Domaine de la Ferrandière promote a specific mineral and water uptake, naturally limiting vine vigour. This uniqueness results in wines of great precision, marked freshness, clear aromatic expression and an impressive ageing potential, particularly rare for wines from such a southern terroir.
