Our selection wines and Bolognese Pasta
With this iconic recipe, the food and wine pairing should not be a default choice but the result of real thought. Indeed, you need to choose a wine capable of matching the acidity of the tomato, the richness of the meat, and the aromatic depth of the dish, without masking its flavors.
Don’t worry— in this article, we share all our tips to help you create the perfect food and wine pairing with spaghetti bolognese!
What wine should you drink with spaghetti bolognese?
Bolognese pairs well with fruity red wines that have a balanced structure and respect both the tomato sauce and the meat. Red wine remains the most obvious choice, but a structured white wine or a gastronomic rosé can also work, depending on the recipe.
Which red wine should you drink with spaghetti bolognese?
Red wine is the best partner for bolognese sauce, as long as it has good fruit, enough acidity to match the tomato, and tannins that are not too aggressive. The goal is not to overpower the dish but to create a harmonious pairing between the richness of the sauce and the indulgent character of the wine.
Our red wine and spaghetti bolognese recommendations
- Wines from Beaujolais, particularly those from Côte-de-Brouilly or Chiroubles, are excellent with spaghetti bolognese thanks to their fruitiness and freshness.
- In Burgundy, a Pinot Noir works very well if the sauce is made with pork or veal.
- In the Rhône Valley, appellations such as AOC Côtes du Rhône, AOC Côte du Vivarais, or AOC Gigondas are perfect with a rich sauce flavored with thyme and garlic.
- In the South of France, wines from Languedoc-Roussillon such as AOC Costières de Nîmes or AOC Minervois pair beautifully with the Mediterranean spirit of the recipe.
- In Italy, Chianti Classico is a natural reference with bolognese sauces. Valpolicella Ripasso and Barbera d'Alba are also excellent choices for a well-reduced sauce.
Which rosé wine should you drink with spaghetti bolognese?
A dry rosé is a very good alternative if you want a lighter pairing, especially in summer. It brings fruitiness, pleasant freshness, and enough structure to complement the tomato sauce.
Our rosé wine and bolognese recommendations
- A well-structured Bandol rosé, in a Mediterranean style, to accompany tomato, garlic, and herbs.
- A Côtes Catalanes rosé if you enjoy fresh rosés with slightly spicy notes.
Which white wine should you drink with spaghetti bolognese?
White wine is not the most intuitive option, but it can work if you have a lighter bolognese, a lighter-colored sauce, and a less rich preparation. In this case, you should choose a white wine with character and good structure.
Our white wine and bolognese recommendations
- A Rhône white wine such as AOC Crozes-Hermitage made from Roussanne and Marsanne if you are looking for body while keeping freshness.
- A white wine from Luberon made from Grenache Blanc if the sauce is lighter.
What are the best food and wine pairings with spaghetti bolognese?
Bolognese varies depending on the meat used, the reduction of the sauce, and its intensity. Here are some simple guidelines to help you choose the right wine.
- Classic bolognese, with ground beef and a well-reduced sauce (dark sauce): a Rhône Valley wine or Barbera d’Alba.
- Lighter bolognese, with a beef/veal mix (lighter sauce): an Alsace or Burgundy wine made from Pinot Noir.
- Tomato and herb bolognese (basil, thyme) in a Mediterranean style: Languedoc-Roussillon wines, Costières de Nîmes, or a structured rosé.
- Bolognese lasagna or a baked version: choose a round and generous red wine from Languedoc or a Valpolicella Ripasso.
