Portraits of winemakers
Vignobles Denis Barraud, Saint-Émilion: Franck Canal-Descudé and the Grand Cru Lynsolence
Since the late 19th century, the Vignobles Denis Barraud have been growing vines in Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens, on the doorstep of Saint-Émilion. Franck Canal-Descudé, a partner in the estate since 1991, now produces two Saint-Émilion Grand Cru wines and a Bordeaux Supérieur across 36 hectares. Available for direct purchase on Avenue des Vins.

How would you describe the Vignobles Denis Barraud?
A family estate since the late 19th century
The estate was established in the late 19th century. Pierre-Henri Descrambe expanded it and passed on his love of the vine to his grandson, Denis Barraud, who ran it from 1971. In 1991, Franck Canal-Descudé became his uncle's partner, before taking sole charge thirty years later.
Sharing our passion for wine.
A simple phrase that sums up how Franck Canal-Descudé sees his craft: before the figures and the awards, passing on a love of wine.
When did you catch the wine bug?
Thirty years alongside his uncle
There was no sudden spark: it was by becoming his uncle's partner, in 1991, that Franck Canal-Descudé caught the wine bug.
I caught the wine bug when I became my uncle's partner.
Thirty years on, it's still an early memory that comes to mind first: his very first harvest, and the feeling of the fermentation in the cellar.
What is the estate's philosophy?
Quality, quality, quality
Asked about the estate's history and philosophy, Franck Canal-Descudé answers without hesitation: carrying on what his uncle taught him, striving for quality, and knowing how to adapt to the climate from one vintage to the next.
You can only make good wine if you have meticulously prepared the vine to give us beautiful grapes, and know how to question yourself every year.
Which wine is most like you?
Lynsolence, the wine that resembles him
If he had to choose the wine that suits him best, Franck Canal-Descudé doesn't hesitate: Lynsolence, the finer and more complex of the estate's two Saint-Émilion Grand Cru wines.
The wine that suits me best is Lynsolence, because it demands far more research — a much finer, more complex wine. A great deal of work with the whole team, from the vine to the cellar.
The name itself carries a family story: the cuvée was born in 1998, named by Sandra, Denis Barraud's daughter, who also designed its label.
Why follow the Vignobles Denis Barraud?
Two right-bank terroirs, one shared standard
The estate splits its 36 hectares between two faces: 7 hectares classified Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, planted entirely in merlot, and 29 hectares in Bordeaux Supérieur. Here, low yields produce dense reds with silky tannins; there, the proximity to Saint-Émilion brings a more approachable finesse. This rigour has been recognised beyond the estate: the 2016 Lynsolence was ranked 3rd in critic Jeb Dunnuck's global Top 100.
In a word, Franck Canal-Descudé sums up his ambition for the years ahead: finding new contacts to bring wider recognition to the estate's wines, and carrying on the standards he inherited from his uncle.
Why buy direct from the winemaker? Wines from the Vignobles Denis Barraud are shipped directly from the estate: property prices with no middleman, full vintage traceability, and HVE certification since 2019.
