What is the history behind the estate?

A family rooted in the village since 1690

With ancestors farming in the village since 1690, the Roger family is far from new to the region! The vineyard operation was first developed by Casimir Roger, Thomas's grandfather, who managed the communal cellar for red wines and Blanquette de Limoux from 1965 to 1990. Later, Thomas's father, Jean, currently the village mayor, consolidated the vineyards inherited from his mother and father, committing to sustainable viticulture. This commitment to environmental respect and nature conservation was further strengthened by Thomas Roger, who took over the management of Domaine Les Cassagnes in 2018. He set out on an ambitious mission to convert the estate's 50 hectares of vineyards to organic farming, a bold challenge that has since become a source of pride for the winemaker.

Who is the winemaker behind the wines?

Thomas Roger, a passionate winemaker

Although the Roger family has cultivated the vineyards of Domaine Les Cassagnes for generations, the entire production was previously delivered to a cooperative cellar. It wasn't until 2021 that Domaine Les Cassagnes ventured into independent winemaking, beginning with two cuvées, with more to follow from the 2022 vintage. Thomas Roger is, above all, a passionate winemaker. His love for wine began at a young age when he helped his grandfather at the cooperative cellar every Wednesday, and he soon informed his father that he wanted to take over the family farm. This passion led him to explore the entire agricultural sector, joining wine clubs, studying at an agricultural engineering school, and interning at other estates. Enriched by this experience and inspired by his daughter Jeanne, who at the age of three declared, "Daddy, I want to make wine with you," Thomas gave a new impetus to his activity by starting vinification at the estate.

Domaine Les Cassagnes offers a wide range of sparkling wines in AOC Crémant de Limoux, both white and rosé, and AOC Blanquette de Limoux, both brut and méthode ancestrale. Since 2021, Thomas Roger has introduced two cuvées under IGP Haute Vallée de l’Aude: "La Casquette de Papa," a 100% Merlot red, and "Les Sarcophages de Pech," a 100% Chardonnay white. The latter is named after the remnants of a medieval necropolis, which the estate unknowingly acquired when purchasing a hill for agricultural use! A portion of the profits from every bottle sold is reinvested in the preservation and enhancement of the site.
