How to buy and keep wine for the birth of your child?

How to Choose, Store, and Enjoy a Wine for Your Child’s Birth Year

To celebrate this special occasion, many parents choose to purchase a wine they can keep and open when their child reaches adulthood. This tradition allows you to symbolically mark the birth and share a unique and moving moment with your child when they come of age. In this guide, we’ll offer some tips on how to select, store, and best appreciate a wine from your child’s birth year.

Choose Reputable Appellations with Aging Potential

When selecting a wine for your child’s birth year, it’s important to consider its aging potential, as it will be enjoyed when your child is old enough. For red wines, prestigious Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Rhône Valley appellations are known for producing high-quality wines that age beautifully over many years. In Bordeaux, you might opt for grand cru wines from the Médoc, such as AOC Margaux or AOC Pauillac. In Burgundy, consider the great wines from the Côte de Nuits, like AOC Gevrey-Chambertin. In the Rhône Valley, you can look towards aging wines such as AOC Hermitage or Côte-Rôtie. Finally, if you prefer white wines, sweet wines from AOC Sauternes or AOC Monbazillac also offer excellent aging potential and often improve with age.

Research the Birth Year Vintage

While you can’t choose the vintage (since it depends on your child’s birth year), it’s useful to research the vintage in different regions and appellations of France. Some vintages can be exceptional in certain regions and less so in others. For example, 2020 is an excellent vintage for red wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy but less favorable in Northern Rhône, whereas 2012 is quite the opposite! Consult wine specialists or guides to make an informed choice.

Opt for Larger Formats

When buying a wine for your child’s birth year, consider opting for larger bottle formats such as magnums (1.5 liters), jeroboams (3 liters), or even mathusalems (6 liters). Larger formats offer better aging potential due to a lower ratio between the wine volume and the surface area in contact with air (between the liquid and the cork). This allows the wine to develop more slowly, preserving its freshness and aromatic complexity for many years. Additionally, if you plan to open the bottle for your child’s 20th birthday, for example, a 75 cl bottle might be a bit small!

Buy Multiple Bottles

It’s advisable to purchase several bottles of the same wine for your child’s birth year. This will allow you to build a small collection that can be enjoyed at various key moments in their life: birthdays, graduations, weddings, etc. By buying multiple bottles, you’ll also have the opportunity to observe how the wine evolves over the years and ensure it remains in good condition.

Where to Buy the Wine

When purchasing a wine for your child’s birth year, it’s crucial to choose the right place to buy it. Avoid supermarkets, which offer uncertain storage conditions and questionable traceability. Instead, opt for purchasing directly from the estate or from specialized sites like Avenue des Vins. Buying from the estate or a specialized site ensures you receive authentic, high-quality wines stored under optimal conditions before delivery.

Ensure Proper Storage

Once you’ve purchased the bottles, it’s essential to store them under optimal conditions. Wines intended for aging should be kept in a wine cellar or a suitable place, away from light, temperature fluctuations, and vibrations. Maintain a constant temperature between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius with an appropriate humidity level (60% to 80%). If you don’t have a wine cellar, consider entrusting your bottles to a professional wine storage service or investing in an electric wine cellar (see our article: How to Choose Your Wine Cellar).

FAQ - Birth-year wine

Which wine should you choose for your child's birth year?

Go for appellations known for their aging potential. For reds, the great growths of Bordeaux (Margaux, Pauillac), the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, or Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie in the Rhône Valley. For whites, sweet wines such as Sauternes or Monbazillac often improve over many years.

How do you know if a birth year is a good vintage?

Vintage quality varies from one region to another: a single year can be outstanding in Bordeaux and more modest in the Rhône Valley. Research region by region and appellation by appellation, using guides or specialists, to pick the bottle with the best aging potential.

Which bottle format is best for an age-worthy wine?

Larger formats age better. A magnum (1.5 l), jeroboam (3 l), or mathusalem (6 l) has a lower air-to-wine ratio, which slows the wine's evolution and preserves its freshness and complexity. A big format also means you won't run short when you gather friends and family.

How should you store a wine you want to keep for twenty years?

Keep the bottles away from light, vibrations, and temperature swings. Maintain a constant temperature between 10 and 15 °C and a humidity level of 60 to 80 %. Without a suitable cellar, an electric wine cabinet or professional storage will do the job.

Why buy a birth year wine directly from the grower?

Buying straight from the estate guarantees an authentic wine, kept in good conditions until delivery, with clear traceability of the vintage. You avoid the uncertain storage of supermarkets and pay the estate price, the one set by the grower.
