How many glasses in a bottle of wine?
Do you want to know how many glasses can be served from a bottle of wine or champagne?
If you are organizing a meal, it is essential to know how many bottles of red wine, white wine, or rosé wine you need to satisfy your guests. Follow our guide below to help you.
How many glasses can be served from a bottle of wine or champagne?
The number of glasses mainly depends on the bottle size: standard, magnum, or larger formats. The typical serving for a glass of wine is between 12 cl and 15 cl. The pour may also vary depending on the context: at home, glasses are usually more generous than in a restaurant or bar.
On average:
- A standard bottle of wine serves about 6 glasses.
- With a more generous pour, count around 5 glasses.
- In restaurants, with 12 cl servings, a bottle can offer slightly more than 6 glasses or champagne flutes.
Different bottle sizes
There are several bottle formats to match the number of guests. The most common are:
- Clavelin (62 cl), mainly used for Jura’s Vin Jaune, serves 5 glasses.
- Standard bottle (75 cl), about 6 glasses.
- Magnum (1.5 L), about 13 glasses.
- Marie-Jeanne (2.25 L), about 19 glasses.
- Jéroboam (3 L), about 25 glasses.
- Réhoboam (4.5 L), about 38 glasses.
- Methuselah (6 L), about 50 glasses.
How much wine to plan per person?
Assuming an average of 13 cl per glass, a standard bottle serves slightly more than 5 glasses. On average, for a typical meal, a person consumes around 3 glasses. You can therefore plan:
- 1 bottle of red wine for 2 people,
- 1 bottle of white wine for 3 people,
- 1 bottle of rosé wine for 3-4 people,
- 1 bottle of champagne for 3-4 people.
With a balanced service, a standard bottle is suitable for 2 guests, while a magnum can serve 4. These estimates may vary depending on the type of meal, guests, and the wine being served.
