Description and origins of Muscat à Petits Grains

Muscat à Petits Grains is an ancient grape variety whose origins date back to Antiquity. It belongs to the large Muscat family and is probably one of the most widely grown grape varieties in the world. This grape is characterized by its small golden berries, sometimes pink or red, that are especially concentrated in aromas. Muscat à Petits Grains is grown in many countries, but finds a particularly remarkable expression in French vineyards, where it is behind some of the most aromatic and prized wines. Unlike other Muscat varieties, Muscat à Petits Grains stands out for its complex aromatic profile and well-balanced acidity, which makes it a grape of choice for producing high-quality dry and sweet white wines.

The main terroirs where Muscat à Petits Grains is grown

In France, Muscat à Petits Grains is grown mainly in the southern regions, where the Mediterranean climate favors optimal ripening. The most famous appellations for this grape are AOC Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise in the Rhône Valley, AOC Muscat de Rivesaltes and AOC Muscat de Saint-Jean-de-Minervois in Languedoc-Roussillon, as well as AOC Muscat de Frontignan and AOC Muscat de Lunel. These appellations are known for their vins doux naturels, in which Muscat à Petits Grains expresses all of its aromatic richness. Besides these regions, Muscat à Petits Grains is also grown in Alsace, where it is used to produce dry, sweet and sparkling wines with characteristic aromas. Thanks to its versatility and its adaptation to various terroirs, this grape plays an essential role in winemaking abroad, notably in Italy, Spain and Greece.

As an aperitif or with a scallop carpaccio, go for a dry white Languedoc wine made from Muscat à Petits Grains from an estate or château in IGP Pays d’Oc. With its intense aromas of fresh grapes, mango, lychee and citrus, this dry white Languedoc wine will bring a dash of excitement to your raw fish recipes.

These sweet white wines, with their complex notes of apricot, honey, raisins, and candied citrus peel, will pair wonderfully with your fruit-based desserts.

Finally, for a regional pairing with a kouglof, dare to serve a fine bottle of white Alsace wine from an estate or château in AOC Alsace Muscat. Muscat à Petits Grains, Muscat of Alexandria and Muscat of Hamburg: three grape varieties to tell apart

Muscat à Petits Grains is the finest and most noble of the large Muscat family, and produces some of the most beautiful white wines of the South as well as of Alsace. It is sometimes confused with two varieties that have similar names but very different characters. Muscat of Alexandria, with its larger berries, ripens in hot climates and also goes into certain sweet wines. Muscat of Hamburg, with its dark skin, remains above all a table grape. So it is Muscat à Petits Grains that produces the most refined expressions, from dry white to sweet wine, as shown by the Alsace Muscat appellation.

Muscat à Petits Grains, the heart of vins doux naturels

A vin doux naturel keeps part of the grape’s sugar thanks to fortification: a little alcohol is added during fermentation to stop it and preserve the sweetness. Harvested fully ripe, Muscat à Petits Grains lends itself wonderfully to this and keeps all of its aromatic intensity. In the South, several appellations have made it their specialty: Muscat de Rivesaltes and Muscat de Saint-Jean-de-Minervois in Languedoc-Roussillon, or Muscat de Frontignan, near the Mediterranean. Serve them well chilled, as an aperitif or with dessert.

Frequently asked questions about Muscat à Petits Grains

Does Muscat à Petits Grains make a dry or sweet wine?

Muscat à Petits Grains is vinified both as a dry white wine and as a sweet wine. In Alsace, it mostly produces dry, aromatic whites; in the South, it is the base of the great vins doux naturels such as Muscat de Rivesaltes or Muscat de Frontignan.

What is the difference between Muscat à Petits Grains and Muscat of Alexandria?

Muscat à Petits Grains is the finest and most aromatic of the Muscats, with small, highly fragrant berries. Muscat of Alexandria, with larger berries, ripens in hot climates and is often more restrained; the two can go into the same sweet wine.

Which appellations come from Muscat à Petits Grains?

Muscat à Petits Grains is at the heart of several French appellations. As a vin doux naturel, it is found in Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise, Muscat de Rivesaltes, Muscat de Frontignan, Muscat de Lunel and Muscat de Saint-Jean-de-Minervois; as a dry white, it expresses itself in the Alsace Muscat appellation.

How long can you keep a Muscat à Petits Grains?

Dry Muscats are best drunk fairly young, within two to three years, to enjoy their aromatic brilliance. Vins doux naturels made from Muscat à Petits Grains, on the other hand, keep for several years and gain candied notes over time.
