Description and Origins of Grenache Gris

Grenache Gris is a natural mutation of Grenache Noir, first appearing in Mediterranean vineyards. Originally from Spain, it quickly spread across southern France, thriving under the generous sun and diverse soils. As its name suggests, this grape variety is distinguished by its grayish-pink skin and early ripening, making it ideal for warm climates. Although less common than its cousins Grenache Noir and Grenache Blanc, it remains highly prized for its potential to create elegant dry and sweet wines.

The Main Terroirs Where Grenache Gris is Cultivated

Grenache Gris is mainly grown in Roussillon and Languedoc, where it benefits from ideal climatic conditions. It flourishes in appellations such as AOC Côtes du Roussillon, AOC Maury, and AOC Banyuls, renowned for their exceptional natural sweet wines. It is also found in IGP Côtes Catalanes, where it is vinified as dry white or rosé wines. Thanks to its resistance to heat, Grenache Gris is a flagship grape variety for Mediterranean wines.

Grenache Gris, from dry whites to Vins Doux Naturels

Grenache Gris is a gray-berried mutation of Grenache, grown mainly in Roussillon and the neighboring Languedoc. It wears two faces. Vinified dry, it gives fresh, textured white wines with a saline edge, along with light, fruity rosés; much of that dry production is bottled as Côtes Catalanes. Picked riper and fortified with neutral grape spirit, the very same grape also goes into the Vins Doux Naturels that made the region famous, such as Rivesaltes and Maury, where the added spirit stops the fermentation and preserves the grape’s natural sweetness.

Serving and keeping Grenache Gris

A dry white or rosé made from Grenache Gris is at its best served chilled, at around 10 to 12 °C, cool enough to lift its freshness and saline finish without closing down the ripe white-fruit aromas. These white wines and rosé wines are generally made to be enjoyed young, within a year or two, while their fruit is at its liveliest. The fortified Vins Doux Naturels are a different matter: richer and higher in alcohol, they are poured a little cooler as an aperitif or with dessert, and the best bottles can be cellared for many years, turning amber and gaining notes of candied fruit and spice.
