Carignan: Origins and Characteristics of This Grape Variety

Carignan is an emblematic red grape variety of the Mediterranean basin, valued for its ability to produce robust, full-bodied wines. Although less famous than some of its neighbors like Grenache or Syrah, Carignan plays a crucial role in the production of many wines from southern France. This red grape, originally from Spain, has gradually become a signature variety of the Languedoc region, contributing to the creation of both complex and expressive red and rosé wines. Dive into the world of Carignan and discover, through this guide, its origins, history, unique features, and the best food and wine pairings to explore.

Description and Origins of Carignan

Carignan, also known as "Cariñena," is a red grape variety native to Spain (likely from the Aragon region). Still cultivated in Spain, the grape made its way to southern France in the 12th century, where it found a second home. Thriving under the warm, sunny climate of southern France, Carignan established itself as a key player in the vineyards of Languedoc-Roussillon. During the 20th century, Carignan became one of the most widely planted grape varieties in France, appreciated for its high yields. However, its reputation suffered due to mass production, often being associated with lower-quality wines. Only recently have passionate winemakers rediscovered Carignan’s potential to produce exceptional quality wines, focusing on meticulous vineyard management and refined winemaking techniques. Today, Carignan is experiencing a true revival, deserving to be (re)discovered and appreciated at its true value.

The Main Terroirs Where Carignan is Grown in France

In France, Carignan thrives under the generous sun of Languedoc-Roussillon, the Rhône Valley, and Provence. These southern French regions benefit from a Mediterranean climate, offering ideal conditions for growing Carignan. Each terroir, with its unique combination of soil, microclimate, and winemaking expertise, allows Carignan to reveal different facets of its personality, contributing to the deep identity of local wines. Although sometimes vinified as a single-varietal wine, Carignan is most often blended with other red grape varieties like Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, or Cinsault, adding its wild and spicy character to the mix.

Aromatic Characteristics of Carignan

Carignan stands out for its aromatic richness, which varies significantly between red and rosé wines, as well as depending on the blend composition.

Characteristics of Carignan in Red Wine:

Appearance: Deep color, often intense, with ruby tones and violet highlights.

Nose: Aromas of red and black fruits (cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry), complemented by spicy notes (pepper) and sometimes herbal hints (bay leaf). Carignan is also distinguished by its "wild" and earthy character, adding remarkable aromatic complexity.

Palate: Solid structure with present but well-integrated tannins, offering a beautiful texture and a persistent finish.

Characteristics of Carignan in Rosé Wine:

Appearance: Light and bright color, with pale pink hues.

Nose: Fresh and fruity, with notes of strawberry and raspberry, while maintaining a floral and spicy undertone.

Palate: Light and refreshing, with well-balanced acidity and a delicately fruity finish.

The Best Food and Wine Pairings with Carignan

Discover our tips for creating the best food and wine pairings with a bottle of red or rosé Carignan wine, featuring some of the finest appellations in France:

  • For beef or tuna carpaccio: Opt for a rosé wine made from Carignan with a fresh and spicy profile. Consider affordable, high-quality rosé wines from IGP Pays d’Oc or IGP Côtes du Brian. The fresh palate and peppery finish of these rosés will beautifully enhance delicate dishes featuring red meat or raw fish.
  • For a successful pairing with leg of lamb or a méchoui: Choose a red wine from an estate in AOC Corbières or AOC Saint-Chinian. These full-bodied, generous Carignan-based wines develop aromas of black fruits, spices, and leather, perfectly complementing flavorful lamb dishes.
  • For an original pairing with a red Carignan wine: Try pairing a prune tagine with a bottle from an estate in AOC Terrasses du Larzac. The roundness of this Languedoc appellation harmonizes perfectly with the spiced and slightly sweet character of this classic North African dish.

As you can see, Carignan is a versatile grape variety, capable of expressing both the strength of its terroir and the finesse of its fruit. Whether through deep, structured red wines or fresh, aromatic rosés, Carignan offers a unique range of sensations. Want to taste a bottle of red or rosé Languedoc wine made from Carignan? Carignan and old vines: the key to its revival

Much of Carignan’s renewed reputation rests on old vines. Across the Languedoc-Roussillon and the wider Midi, many Carignan vines (vieilles vignes) were planted decades ago, and their naturally low yields concentrate the fruit. These old vines give deeply colored, structured and tannic reds with real depth, a world away from the high-yield wines that once weighed on the grape’s image. Appellations such as Corbières are a stronghold for this old-vine style, where Carignan brings backbone and a wild, spicy character to the blend.

Serving and cellaring a Carignan wine

A red wine made from Carignan is best served at around 16 to 17 °C, a temperature that softens its firm tannins and lets the red and black fruit come through. Decanting a young, structured cuvée for half an hour helps it open up. For storage, keep your bottles lying down, away from light and heat, at a stable temperature: the structured reds, especially those from old vines, can wait a few years in the cellar. The fresh rosé wines, on the other hand, are best served well chilled and enjoyed young, while their fruit is at its liveliest.
