The Burgundy region is iconic. The vineyards of Burgundy extend over 50,100 hectares. The Burgundy region produces approximately 2,650,000 hectolitres. Burgundy predominantly cultivates four grape varieties. : Two black, Pinot and Gamay, two white, Chardonnay and Aligoté. Generic Burgundy wines are product in four departments : the Yonne, the Côte-d'Or, the Saône-et-Loire and the Rhône. The latter is not in Burgundy, but by decree it is possible to downgrade a Beaujolais in one of the regional Burgundian appellations.
