Sieur d’Arques: the historic reference for Limoux sparkling wines, between tradition and sustainable vision

In Limoux, long before bubbles became a global symbol of celebration, they already existed.
Sieur d’Arques does not follow a trend: the house has been writing the history of sparkling wines for nearly five centuries, combining heritage, technical precision and environmental commitment.

Here, bubbles are not meant to impress. They are meant to strike true.

The world’s first sparkling wine was born here, in 1531

It was in 1531, at the Abbey of Saint-Hilaire, that Benedictine monks accidentally discovered the natural fermentation of a still white wine.
The world’s first sparkling wine had just been born—long before Champagne.

This ancestral know-how, passed down through generations, is now embodied by Sieur d’Arques, officially founded in 1946 by winegrowers determined to take control of their destiny and protect the unique identity of Limoux.

Limoux, a truly distinctive terroir in the Languedoc

The Limoux vineyard is a geographical exception:

altitude between 200 and 500 meters

combined Mediterranean, Atlantic and Pyrenean influences

clay-limestone soils with excellent natural drainage

The result is a rare natural freshness in the Languedoc, perfectly suited to producing great sparkling wines and outstanding Chardonnay-based whites.

Sieur d’Arques was a pioneer of parcel selection, identifying four major terroirs to match each grape variety with its ideal microclimate. A true winegrower’s approach—on a large scale, yet never industrial in spirit.

Traditional method & ancestral method: two strong signatures

Traditional Method

Used for Blanquette de Limoux and Crémant de Limoux, it relies on a second fermentation in the bottle.
The wines gain finesse and complexity, with elegant, persistent bubbles.

Ancestral Method

Rarer and more mysterious.
Based on a single emblematic grape of Limoux: Mauzac.

Naturally sweet, low in alcohol, fruity and free of artifice, it charms with its authenticity and immediate drinkability.

Responsible wines, designed for tomorrow

At Sieur d’Arques, performance is not measured only in bottles produced, but also in positive impact.

95% of the vineyard certified HVE

objective: 100% High Environmental Value

complete elimination of CMR-classified phytosanitary products

development of organic cuvées and wines with no added sulfites

respect for winegrowers, consumers and nature

The no-added-sulfites Chardonnay perfectly illustrates this philosophy: a straight, pure and precise wine that is enjoying growing success among drinkers seeking more digestible and authentic wines.

Sieur d’Arques: the balance between heritage and boldness

Sieur d’Arques proves that large-scale production can go hand in hand with high standards, that a historic house can remain innovative, and that a sparkling wine can be accessible, committed and deeply rooted in its identity.

Here, every bubble tells the story of Limoux. And Limoux imitates no one.

What is the difference between Blanquette de Limoux made using the ancestral method and Crémant de Limoux made using the traditional method, and how can you choose the one that best matches your taste ?
