The Vignerons of Maury: The Soul of a Cathar and Catalan Terroir
Founded in 1910, the Maury Cooperative Winery is far more than a simple winemaking facility: it is a chapter of Roussillon’s history, at the crossroads of Occitan, Cathar, and Catalan cultures. Overlooked by the Château de Quéribus, a symbolic stronghold of Cathar country, the vineyard flourishes between the Corbières mountain chain and the first foothills of the Pyrenees. Here, on poor black schist soils and under the influence of a hot, windy climate, Grenache reigns supreme.
A Century-Old Winery at the Heart of Roussillon
For over 100 years, the Maury cellar has embodied winegrower solidarity. Born from the need to unite in the face of viticultural crises, it still brings together nearly 130 cooperative members today. Together, they carry on a collective model based on shared expertise, equality among winegrowers, and respect for the land. This organization has safeguarded an exceptional vineyard where tradition meets innovation.
Maury: Sweet Natural Wines and Dry Wines
The Maury appellation is one of the oldest in France, officially recognized in 1936 for its Sweet Natural Wines (Vins Doux Naturels). These fortified wines, produced by stopping fermentation with the addition of wine spirit, preserve the grape’s natural sweetness.
Maury Tuilés: notes of cocoa, prune, and roasted aromas.
Maury Ambrés: flavors of candied orange, honey, and dried fruits.
Maury Grenats: fruity intensity and indulgent tannins.
Maury Blancs: freshness with floral and pear notes.
In 2011, the appellation gained a new dimension: Maury Sec. Vinified mainly from Grenache Noir, sometimes blended with Carignan, Syrah, or Mourvèdre, it represents the modern, fruit-forward expression of the terroir.
A Unique Terroir: Black Schist and Mediterranean Climate
The Maury vineyard stretches across 900 hectares in the heart of the Agly Valley. The black schist soil is naturally poor, limiting yields and concentrating the grapes’ flavors. The Mediterranean climate, with more than 260 days of sunshine per year and the Tramontane wind, shapes powerful, balanced wines with excellent aging potential.
Grenache, the King of Maury
Grenache is the emblematic grape of the region. Found in three colors—white, grey, and black—it produces a wide palette of wines, from the mineral freshness of whites to the aromatic power of reds. Many vines are over 50 years old, pruned in goblet shape and hand-harvested, ensuring artisanal work and consistent quality.
Dedicated Men and Women
Being a winegrower in Maury means accepting the challenge of working on steep, stony slopes, but also living a daily passion. The cooperative values the know-how of both men and women, who are now present at every level: winemaking, management, leadership, and vineyard work. This diverse collective proudly upholds the identity of a unique appellation.
