The history of Maison Penet: four centuries of excellence

Winegrowing has been part of the family history since the 17th century, but it was in the 1930s that Desire and Gilbert Penet produced their first cuvees. In the 1940s, Emile Penet modernised the estate by buying a 19th-century Maison de Maitre in Verzy, with majestic vaulted cellars, and introduced the first mechanised equipment.

In 1967, the marriage of Christian Penet and Marie-Louise Chardonnet, from a family of winegrowers in Verzenay, made it possible to merge the vineyards and create the Penet-Chardonnet brand, with 6 hectares in Grand Cru. Today, Alexandre Penet, 4th generation, and his wife Martine carry on the family adventure by combining precision, modernity and respect for the terroir.

Our vineyard: an exceptional terroir in the Montagne de Reims

The estate extends over 6 hectares in the Grand Cru villages of Verzy and Verzenay, mostly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Each plot, or named lieu-dit, has a unique identity thanks to the exposure and the composition of the soils, revealing the singularity of the Montagne de Reims terroir.

Maison Penet practises a sustainable and reasoned viticulture, without chemical fertilisers, herbicides or insecticides. The soils are worked to respect biodiversity and the natural cycle of the vine. The champagnes are made with a low sugar dosage, a long ageing and, in some cases, a partial passage in oak barrels to bring structure and roundness.
