Domaine du Serre des Vignes – Five decades of heritage and passion in Grignan-les-Adhémar
A family story rooted in the land. The story of Domaine du Serre des Vignes begins with Edwige and Sylvain Roux, founders of a great Drôme winemaking lineage. Of their nine children, Jean-Louis and Daniel chose in 1973 to take over the family vineyards, the very year the Tricastin AOC was created. Under the guidance of Émile Pellegrin, they planted their first plots of Grenache before introducing Syrah in the 1980s.
In the 1990s, the next generation took shape: Jérôme, Daniel’s son, joined the estate. In 1994, he partnered with his cousin Vincent, Jean-Louis’s son, to found the GAEC du Serre des Vignes. Together they modernized the tools while preserving the original philosophy: tending the vine with respect and high standards.
After a period in a cooperative, the first estate vinifications began in 2003. Awards soon recognized the quality of their work. In 2007, a modern semi-underground winery was built, enabling on-site bottling. True to their vision, Jérôme and Vincent embarked on organic conversion in 2008 and obtained AB certification in 2011.
A unique terroir between La Lance and the Drôme hillsides
The estate lies on gravelly clay-limestone alluvial fans rich in fine elements. Shallow yet fertile, they rest on grey and bluish marls that retain natural moisture. The hillside vines enjoy optimal sunlight and cool nights flowing down from Montagne de la Lance (1,340 m). These thermal swings yield concentrated grapes with thicker skins, a promise of intense aromas and natural balance.
Grape varieties
Reds & Rosés: Syrah, Grenache Noir, Cinsault
Whites: Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne
Each variety finds its matching soil and slow ripening here, producing generous, racy wines true to their Grignan-les-Adhémar appellation.
The cellar: between tradition and technical precision
Harvest begins mid-September with white grapes, followed by reds at the end of September. Picking is 75% mechanical and 25% manual for old vines.
Winemaking takes place in a semi-underground cellar designed for temperature control and purity of wine:
- Concrete tanks for natural thermal inertia and magnetic neutrality, encouraging gentle clarification.
- Stainless-steel tanks with cooling jackets, ideal for whites and rosés fermented at low temperature (14°C).
- Oak barrels for aging top reds and whites, gaining roundness and complexity.
An independent oenologist advises the estate through to bottling, done on site to ensure perfect traceability.
Signature cuvées with character
- Cœur de Grenache – 100% Grenache: From limestone scree terroir, a fleshy, sun-kissed red with ripe red-fruit aromas and sweet spices. A vibrant, generous pure Grenache.
- Les Grands Plans – Grenache 60%, Syrah 40%: From a clay-limestone plateau swept by the mistral, balancing power and freshness. Syrah brings structure; Grenache brings indulgence.
- Mas de Merlère – Grenache 50%, Syrah 50%: The estate’s emblematic cuvée from old vines sheltered from the wind. Black fruit and licorice meet a velvety, ample, harmonious texture.
- Secret de Syrah – 100% Syrah: A pure, elegant Syrah from stony limestone soils. Blackberry, pepper, and violet; a long, racy finish with real depth.
- Sarrazine – Syrah 90%, Viognier 10%: A rare alliance of strength and finesse: Syrah asserts its power while Viognier adds floral brightness and a touch of velvet.
- Pure Quintessence – 100% Syrah, no added sulfites: A living, vibrant wine symbolizing the estate’s natural approach. Remarkable aromatic intensity and purity with a full, flowing palate.
- La Dignerette – Grenache 85%, Cinsault 15%: A shimmering salmon-hued rosé of finesse. Fresh red fruit and citrus notes. Perfect for summer or as an aperitif.
- Les Perraches – Roussanne 40%, Marsanne 40%, Grenache Blanc 20%: An aromatic, balanced white with white-fruit, honey, and a subtle mineral finish.
- Loulys – 100% Viognier: Pure varietal expression: white flowers, apricot, and peach. Ample, fresh palate with a silky texture.
- Éclat de Roche – 100% Cinsault: A supple, fruity red from stony soils. Lightly spicy, charming for its lightness and immediate gourmandise.
A philosophy: balance between people and nature
Jérôme and Vincent Roux farm their vines with conviction and precision, convinced that great wine is born from balance between a living terroir and measured intervention. Their organic commitment, rigorous vinifications, and respect for lunar rhythms give Domaine du Serre des Vignes a unique signature: sincere, generous wines with natural elegance.
