Domaine de Barroubio – The Soul of Muscat de Saint-Jean-de-Minervois and Great Wines of the Minervois
Over 1,000 Years of History and a Family Legacy. Located in the heart of the Minervois, Domaine de Barroubio traces its roots back to medieval times. The first written records of the estate date from the year 900, preserved in the archives of Narbonne. Since 1405, the Miquel family has cared for these lands. Today, the estate is still passed down from generation to generation, a true symbol of continuity and loyalty to this unique terroir.
Over the centuries, each member of the family has left their mark. Jean Miquel (1859–1940), a renowned paleontologist and archaeologist, managed to combine science and viticulture. Since the 2000s, Raymond Miquel has been running the estate, after vinifying for many years alongside his mother Marie-Thérèse, a pioneer in modernizing the local Muscat.
A High-Altitude Terroir of Limestone and Clay-Limestone
The hamlet of Barroubio sits at 300 meters above sea level, on the border between Aude and Hérault, spanning the communes of Saint-Jean-de-Minervois and Bize-Minervois.
- Limestone soils give birth to the Muscats of Saint-Jean-de-Minervois, the emblematic sweet wines of the appellation.
- Clay-limestone soils host red varieties (Syrah, Carignan, Grenache) that shine in AOC Minervois wines.
This geological diversity, combined with a Mediterranean climate marked by warmth and the Tramontane wind, produces wines that are powerful, balanced, and elegant.
Responsible Viticulture Certified HVE
Since 2018, Domaine de Barroubio has been certified High Environmental Value (HVE). This certification recognizes sustainable viticulture practices that respect biodiversity and drastically reduce the use of chemical inputs.
This approach reflects the Miquel family’s commitment to preserving the richness of their soils and passing on a living heritage to future generations.
