Domaine Baron de l’Écluse – The Soul of Beaujolais on the Slopes of Mont Brouilly
A Vineyard Rooted in History and Passion. In the heart of Beaujolais, in the village of Odenas, the Domaine Baron de l’Écluse covers 17 hectares spread across Beaujolais Villages, Brouilly, and Côte de Brouilly. On the sunlit slopes of Mont Brouilly, winemaker Jean-François Pegaz crafts authentic, expressive wines that reflect their terroir. The estate’s name honors both its location — “L’Écluse,” an old valley carved by water — and the legendary French film Le Baron de l’Écluse starring Jean Gabin. In 2018, the winery even helped restore the film, sealing its bond between culture and wine.
Two Crus, Two Faces of Mont Brouilly - Côte de Brouilly – Strength and Elegance
On six hectares of primary-era blue schist soils, facing east and south, 60-year-old vines produce deep, structured wines with aromas of pepper, graphite, and warm stone. The famous “Pierre Bleue” gives these wines their distinctive mineral tension and depth.
Brouilly – Smoothness and Fruity Charm
Across 4.5 hectares of pink granite soils surrounding Mont Brouilly, the wines show a supple, silky profile with notes of red fruits and violets. At an average altitude of 320 meters, the terroir balances ripeness and freshness beautifully.
A Handcrafted Vineyard that Respects Life
On the steep slopes of Mont Brouilly, human hands are essential. The estate follows an agro-ecological approach rooted in observation and respect for biodiversity:
- No insecticides for over seven years, thanks to pheromone-based pest control (sexual confusion).
- Terra Vitis certified since 2017 and HVE Level 3 since 2020.
- Organic conversion initiated in 2021 on selected plots.
The guiding philosophy is simple: protecting the ecosystem means preserving the soul of the wine.
Precise and Inspired Winemaking
Trained as an oenologist, Jean-François Pegaz traveled through Australia, New Zealand, and Chile before returning home to Odenas in 2013. These international experiences enriched his technical precision and open-minded approach to winemaking.
- Côte de Brouilly: Partial destemming, 10–15 days of maceration for structure, spice, and depth.
- Brouilly & Beaujolais Villages: Semi-carbonic maceration — the signature of Beaujolais — highlighting fruit and freshness.
Ageing takes place in concrete vats for traditional cuvées and in oak barrels for the most expressive wines.
Characterful Wines Made for Ageing
The wines rest in a natural underground cellar through winter before being bottled at the estate. Age-worthy cuvées continue their maturation for at least a year, gaining in complexity and finesse. The Côte de Brouilly Vieilles Vignes reaches its peak after three to four years, when structure and fruit find perfect harmony.
Wine Tourism by Jean-François Pegaz
More than a vineyard, the Domaine Baron de l’Écluse is a place of life and conviviality. Jazz concerts in the natural amphitheater, vineyard picnics inspired by Australia, and a panoramic guesthouse facing the Alps — this is Beaujolais in its purest form: wine, friends, and breathtaking landscapes.
Signature Wines of the Estate
- Plaisirs de Pégase – Beaujolais Villages Nouveau: Bursting with crunchy red fruit, soft and joyful. A wine made for sharing in the moment.
- Côte de Brouilly – Vieilles Vignes: Deep, elegant, and mineral. A structured Gamay with ageing potential — perfect with red meats, game, or mature cheeses.
A Clear Philosophy: Nature, Sincerity, and Sharing
For over fifty years, the Pegaz family has followed one conviction: great wine is made in the vineyard, with respect and patience. This artisanal approach, enriched with modern oenological expertise, makes the Domaine Baron de l’Écluse a reference for authentic Beaujolais wines.
