Château Lamartine: Cahors - Lot Valley

Château Lamartine: the spirit of Cahors, where heritage, terroir and fresh energy meet.

History and origins of the estate

An estate built on 140 years of history.

1883
The estate is founded, on the site of a centuries-old oak tree known as "l'arbre de Martine" - the origin of its name.
1920
Édouard Sérougne plants the first vines.
1955
First estate-bottled wines - a historic turning point.
1971
Édouard travels to Paris to defend the creation of the Cahors appellation before the INAO.
1988
Creation of the Cuvée Particulière, which quickly becomes a true emblem of the estate.
1996
Launch of the Cuvée Expression, celebrated for its finesse and freshness.
2016
Lise and Benjamin open a new chapter with Tandem - a next-generation Malbec.

A new generation brings fresh momentum

In 2016, Lise and Benjamin - the fourth generation - took the reins of the family estate. Their approach blends absolute respect for tradition with a desire to reinvent Cahors, bringing freshness, precision and modernity. To mark their arrival, they created Tandem, a 100% Malbec cuvée that quickly became a symbol: an estate in motion, driven by two complementary personalities.

The terroir and its unique character

On the western side of the Cahors appellation, Château Lamartine occupies an enviable position that gives it a rare advantage: early ripening. The grapes mature ahead of schedule, providing remarkable consistency in vintage quality across the years.

Château Lamartine has the privilege of working one of the finest mosaic terroirs in the Lot valley. Its 37 hectares, bathed in sunlight thanks to full south-facing exposure, rest on soils of striking variety. This natural patchwork shapes wines that move between elegance, tension, roundness and depth.

60%
3rd terrace
Clay-limestone soils, ideal for refined, deep and precisely chiselled wines.
30%
4th terrace
Pure limestone soils, producing straight, vibrant and tense wines.
10%
2nd terrace
Sandy-clay soils, yielding more enveloping, fleshy and generous wines.

The climate, shaped by both Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, ensures perfect ripening: warm days, cool nights and the particular light that gives Cahors all its density.

Working the vines and our commitments

For decades, the estate has championed farming that respects the land. Alain Gayraud, one of Lamartine's defining figures, has always placed soil work at the heart of his philosophy. A natural commitment: to produce great wines, you must first honour what gives them life. In 2022, this exigence became official with the organic certification of the entire vineyard.

Winemaking relies on modern equipment: precise sorting, traditional pigeage, temperature control and stainless steel vats adapted to each cuvée. The fully air-conditioned ageing cellars house several hundred French oak barrels sourced from seven different cooperages, a deliberate choice that allows the team to refine aromatic profiles and elevate each wine to the appellation's highest level.

Grape varieties and appellations

Reds (34 ha): Malbec in the lead (90%), complemented by Merlot and Tannat.

Whites: Chardonnay, Chenin and Viognier, a bold choice for Cahors that allows the estate to explore other aromatic expressions with genuine finesse.

What you will only find at Château Lamartine

A unique mosaic of terroirs in the Lot valley. 60% clay-limestone on the third terrace, 30% pure limestone on the fourth, 10% sandy-clay on the second, a rare geological diversity that gives each cuvée its own distinct personality.

140 years of history, a fourth generation at the helm. From the planting of the first vines in 1920 to the creation of Tandem in 2016, Château Lamartine embodies the living transmission of family expertise across five generations.

Cahors certified organic since 2022. Full vineyard organic certification in 2022, the culmination of a farming philosophy championed for decades by Alain Gayraud.

Bold whites in a land of Malbec. Chardonnay, Chenin and Viognier in Cahors, an unconventional choice, carried off with finesse, that broadens the estate's aromatic range well beyond the classic appellation.

Frequently asked questions about Château Lamartine

What sets Cahors apart from other Malbec wines around the world ?

Cahors is the historic home of Malbec, long before the grape conquered Argentina. On the limestone terraces of the Lot valley, it develops a depth, tension and minerality that New World versions rarely reach. Château Lamartine, with its three soil types and full south-facing exposure, stands as one of the most complete expressions of what Cahors Malbec can be.

Why buy Château Lamartine wines directly, with no middleman ?

Because every bottle leaves directly from the family estate in the Lot valley, bypassing any intermediate warehouse. You receive the wine in the exact storage conditions maintained by Lise and Benjamin, at its best, at a fair price, dispatched by a team that knows every cuvée it sends.

Is Château Lamartine certified organic ?

Yes, since 2022. The certification of the entire vineyard is the result of a commitment carried for decades by Alain Gayraud, who has always placed soil care at the very centre of his winemaking philosophy.

Which cuvée is best to start discovering Château Lamartine ?

For a first discovery: Le Pêcher Mignon or Tandem Rouge, fruity and approachable from the first pour. To explore the estate's depth: the Cuvée Particulière or Expression, both selected Malbecs that reveal the full complexity of Cahors limestone terroirs. For lovers of atypical whites: Expression Chenin or Expression Chardonnay, confidential and genuinely surprising.

What food pairs well with Château Lamartine wines ?

Lamartine's reds, deep, structured, with silky tannins, are a magnificent match for red meats, duck confit, cassoulet and aged cheeses from the South-West. The Cuvée Particulière and Expression deserve long, leisurely meals and slow-cooked dishes. The Tandem and Expression whites will surprise alongside sauced fish, goat's cheeses or truffle-stuffed poultry.
